NPR did a great piece yesterday on how _screwed_ Texas is. Because they
passed so many tax cuts in order to make Dubya look good for the
Presidential campaign they now are facing a massive revenue problem and
have to make $1 billion in cuts to bring the budget in line.
(Hmmm.... this sounds familiar some how.)

Yes, it was a good piece. Dubya screwed Texas and Texas
went along happliy with a BIG TAX CUT.
Neverr mind the future, ignore them Democrats and
liberals telling us the facst are that this is a bad
idea that will hurt us in the near future.

So does the stream of companies laying off 3%, 5%, 10%
of their work force. Just like in Daddy Bush's
stupid administration.

Seriously, having worked as a bureaucrat, with a "trim the
meat and leave the fat, because that'll scare 'em enough
so they'll leave the fat and look elsewhere" attitude in
government; I have to ask a question:
What is so frigging VITAL that a State government does today
that it didn't do twenty years ago?
If you think about it, all the REAL stuff that a State gov't
does AND all the GEE WE'RE NICE LIBERAL GUYS STUFF too, they
WERE doing twenty years ago. ALL that has happened in the
last twenty years is that the pork fat has become PORK FATTIER.
Think about it. MOST of the new money pumped into education,
the #1 item on most State budgets, just goes into hiring more
asshole bureaucrats to make life HELL for teachers and students.
(It SHOULD go elsewhere, BUT...IT...WON'T.)
State government JUST WON'T spend more than 'x' amount of money
on "MEAT" projects. FORCES BEYOND THEIR CONTROL WILL FORCE
THEM TO SPEND IT ON "FAT."
Yeah, it's a bummer. But that's the way it is. So when you
cut back, and the bureaucrats whine about cutting essential
services--BULLSHIT! They're LYING! TAKE THEM OUT AND SHOOT
THEM.
They can live on bologna just like inmates can.

Alabama, our state government decided that schools needed to lose 3-5% of
their funding because of cutbacks, but they spoent no telling how many
millions of dollars passing legislation making it okay to display the
fucking ten commandments in all public buildings. Alabama is ranked 46th in
the country in education, and first in blatant stupidity. I swear to Bob,
the idiots in this state elected a bible thumpin' idiot (Roy Moore...for
those of you who don't know, this waste of life proudly displayed the tem
commandments in his courtroom...the ACLU made him take 'em down, but he
fought it, goddammit!!!) to the chief justice position of the State Supreme
Court and his first act as cheif justice????? HE GAVE HIMSELF A PAY
RAISE!!!!!!

I am not now, nor will I defend a State legislator of
anything.
I think it was my grandfather who first disparaged them
to me, saying "If you buy a federal judge for $100, you
*know* he will stay bought. But if you give a State
legislator $20 to vote one way, then somebody else comes
along later and gives them $10 to vote the other--they'll
vote the other! Damn fools are too dishonest to be corrupt!"
The BEST one can hope for is a State government that is
SO wacky that they will tie themselves up in knots and NOT
DO ANYTHING. (Ah, for the days of Evan Mecham)
The best you can hope for in any other alternative is that
you, personally, are ignored. Hoping that they will EVER
DO ANYTHING FOR YOU is a pie-in-the-sky attitude, and only
leads to disappointment and bitter cynicism.

That's a solid Libertarian argument but you're missing the point.
Texas wasn't interested in cutting spending... they just wanted to cut
taxes and decided to pretend that somehow the revenue would be the same.
Of course "past performance is not an indicator of future gains" as they
say on Wall Street and the money didn't show up.
And Texas isn't alone in this... over twenty states cut taxes while raising
spending and now have a deficit problem.
Do you think they will cut spending? Of course not... now they 'need' to
raise taxes again, and in a hurry.
