mcluhaninstitute seems to be sporadically unavailable lately. It might be
because of connections to the website of Nelson Thall's Cloak and Dagger. He
owns mcluhaninstitute.
"Dada"? It goes like this:
LaRouche quadrant = Impressionism
McLuhan quadrant = Cubism and Dada
Thompson quadrant = Surrealism
Kroker quadrant = Duchamp
Dobbs quadrant = any national intelligence agency

Nelson Thall's Cloak and Dagger - Wow, he's actually crazier than you!
I don't THINK so. Nobody's crazier than me.

[Futurism always gets the shaft!!
Dada music is boring, Surrealist music is mostly irritating with notable
exceptions (NURSE WITH WOUND!), but huge neighbourhoods of the best modern
music are straight out of the Futurist project........ not just "electronic"
either (Mike Patton's 'Pranzo Oltranzista' is weird wild stuff)........ but
since they screamed of ecstatic union with the machine, could they possibly
be McLuhan quadrant as well??]
I replied:
There are no value judgments in the list. Each quadrant matches with
specific dates. So, yes, the Futurist project fits in the McLuhan quadrant -
it being an anticipation, like Cubism and Dada, of the effects of the
television environment of the Fifties (not satellite/television which is the
Sixties). I left it out because MM, being an adherent of Lewis' Vorticist
movement, diminishes the Futurists as Lewis did. But those personal
preferences are not really relevant to the pattern of the list/chart. For
example, the same principles apply to the following per MUSIC:
LaRouche quadrant = Wagner
McLuhan quadrant = Schoenberg and Stravinsky
Thompson quadrant = Webern
Kroker quadrant = Varese
Dobbs quadrant = any national intelligence agency
Each person in each quadrant is an anti-environment to the named Artist or
Musician on my lists above and below.
The arts and sciences, in retrospect, were molded (almost a knee-jerk,
reflexive reaction) by the medium/technology of their day. That's McLuhan's
insight.
