I finished it (1,085 pages - it took me about 8 months) at 7:30am,
Monday, May 20, 2013 - exactly 5 years to the day when Carolyn and I
flew out of New York City for L.A., then on to Maui, 12 days later.
The last sentence of the novel - four words - fits that situation in
light of what would happen a year later with iON's arrival.
It is perhaps the greatest novel I've ever read - and I've read a few
good ones over the last 70 years.
I also stated recently that Pynchon's new novel, BLEEDING EDGE -
scheduled for release in September, 2013 - is probably about Carolyn
and me in New York City during the 1999-2001 period.
Pynchon's publisher has released the opening page:
http://gothamist.com/2013/04/13/read_the_first_page_of_thomas_pynch.php
Note that the first sentence takes place on Carolyn's birthday.
And the blurb summary says this:
[[ Maxine Tarnow is running a nice little fraud investigation business
on the Upper West Side, chasing down different kinds of small-scale
con artists. She used to be legally certified but her license got
pulled a while back, which has actually turned out to be a blessing
because now she can follow her own code of ethics—carry a Beretta, do
business with sleazebags, hack into people’s bank accounts—without
having too much guilt about any of it. ]]
Carolyn has always investigated medical fraud; her book, DEATH BY
MODERN MEDICINE, started as a report released from Gary Null's office
on the "Upper West Side" of Manhattan in October, 2003; and "her
license got pulled a while back."
We'll see what page 2 says very soon.
So, perhaps Pynchon's photo (posted somewhere on DUPES a few months
ago) is one of me.
