I was looking for something else altogether and stumbled across this
info. Figured it ought to be passed around:

Mad Scientists' Ball!

Dragon*Con 2008 – Monday morning all the talk was about the 1st
Annual Mad Scientists' Ball and ARCATTACK - The Singing Tesla Coils.

Were you there last year? If not, talk to anyone who partied with us
at the 1st Annual Mad Scientists' Ball – they'll tell you it rocked!
It was ELECTRIC!!! I mean that literally. You've never seen anything
like this before. It's mad! It's science! And it was a ball!! lol
Sooo, we're going to do it again.

*** The 2nd Annual Mad Scientists' Ball ***

We did have one big problem last year – we surprised ourselves and
TPTB on how popular geeks had become. So popular, in fact, we didn't
have enough room. The line to get in was so long the hotel made us
clear the room at each break and let the next group standing in line
in. That is not going to happen in 2009; we asked for a larger room
for this year and Dragon*Con listened. We've been given a larger room
– a much larger room. I'm psyched to be able to tell you all that the
The 2nd Annual Mad Scientists' Ball will be in the Hyatt Regency VI &
VII. You all know that room; last year it was the double ballroom
right next door to us where the Pirate Ball was held. Well, it's ours
now.

We are, of couse, bringing back ARCATTACK. What's a Mad Scientists'
Ball without wild, geeky science entertainment? We're also not stupid
and are the first to admit that although the blinkies, glow bracelets,
LN2 ice cream and Suzie the Floosie in full floosie regala were
definitely a lot of fun, it was ARCATTACK that drew the crowds. The
rest was just frosting on the cake.

ARCATTACK has been making a name for themselves even apart from
Dragon*Con. Powers That Be from ChattaCon saw/heard them in 2008 and
invited them to their convention earlier this year. They were huge hit
but we would expect nothing else. Being from Texas, ARCATTACK was
invited to SXSW in Austin and singing tesla coils let loose without a
ceiling is, well, electric! ARCATTACK has done other various shows and
conventions but the big news is their European Tour! Hot Stuff.
Fortunately, we knew them when they were just a couple of geeks with a
cool idea and they are happy to come help us make the 2nd Annual Mad
Scientists' Ball bigger, wilder and crazier than the 1st.

Speaking of craziness . . . jonnyX decided to add even more the 2nd
Annual Mad Scientists' Ball; and I do mean craziness!! Tesla coils are
a blast but what a bummer when they have to take those breaks to let
the coils cool off. We needed some other type of geeky entertainment
to carry us through. After disuading jonnyX from offering his cattle
prode to be used for a $1 a zap, he cast his mind back to the craziest
event he has taken part in while at a convention. Hang on People; The
Church of the SubGenius is making an entrance! The Reverand Ivan Stang
and his faithful Preistess, Suzie the Floozie will walk amongst you
and 'Save' what's left of your soul. The winner of the Science Track's
'Who Wants to Be a Super Villan?' will also make an appearance and
most likely be looking to recruit (or kidnap) minions.

ARCATTACK has made a discovery of their own and are briging them along
to open the show. One Eyed Doll has been making new fans all across
the country but are based out of Austin, TX. Check them out and you'll
see they'll fit right in with the madness.

Yes, this year's Mad Scientists' Ball will again be the Dragon*Con
event that you SHOULD NOT MISS! As we did last year, we strongly
encourage the wearing of any and all mad scientist, evil genius,
steampunk, super villan, or geek apparel and paraphinalia. If the
Space and Science Tracks' minions recognize you as one of the above;
the goodies mentioned above shall be bestowed upon you.

Mark the 2nd Annual Mad Scientists' Ball on your Dragon*Con calendar
now. All details below:

DATE: Sunday, September 6, 2009
PLACE: Hyatt Regency Hotel - Regency Ballrooms VI & VII

Rev. Suzie the Floozie
– Church of the SubGenius & Sci–fi Author

Rev. Susie the Floozie has been a DragonCon fixture since the first
one in 1987. Before then, her early years as poster girl and stage
hostess made her the darling of the early Atlanta SF Con scene. Since
then she's moved on to conquer diverse fields as a writer, radioshow
creator, comicbook letterer, stripper, performance artist, graphic
designer, columnist, comedian, dominatrix, record-album archivist, and
high priestess of a comedy UFO cult, among other things. Since 1994
she has written, directed, performed in, and produced her own one-
woman radioshow for the church of the SubGenius at Atlanta's WREKfm,
"Bob's SlackTime Funhouse," with a pioneering new approach to
soundediting which she calls "Recombinant Comedy." By skillful
manipulation of soundbites, Susie has turned George W. Bush into a
comedy character, and her mind-blowing radio work has garnered her
praise from all corners and a devoted Internet following.

On top of the weekly radio gig, Susie is also the regular columnist
for RUSE magazine (www.rusemag.com), continuing her long-running and
irreverent "Insolent Bystander" column. Right now, she is working on
"Slow Dance in Strangerville," her memoir detailing her insane roller-
coaster life in the worlds of comics and science fiction while
struggling with the terrors of faceblindness.

Suzie is the Sultry, Sexy Queen of Outrageousness! Suzie has been
beguiling men and women for years. Whether running a devival with Rev.
Stang or on her own, or even when offering a helping hand at the Mad
Scientists' Ball, once Suzie has graced your presence – you'll never
be the same!

Rev. Ivan Stang
– Illustrious Leader – Church of the SubGenius

Rev. Ivan Stang is the creator (under "Bob" Dobbs) of the satirical
Church of the SubGenius, which counts among its ordained ministers and
collaborators many celebs including: Rudy Rucker, the late Robert
Anton Wilson, John Shirley, Bob Burden, Pee Wee Herman, Bruce
Campbell, Jonathan Demme, David Byrne, Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton,
most of DEVO, Mark Fraunfelter (of boing-boing and Wired), Poppy Z.
Bright, the late Dr. Timothy Leary, Paul Krassner, Robert Williams,
Lewis Shiner, Nancy Collins, Paul Mavrides, Winston Smith, The
Firesign Theater, Hal Robins, the bands Sublime and GWAR, and roughly
40,000 much less well-known people.

Stang is the main author of 5 SubGenius books (~100,000 sales from
Simon & Schuster); THE BOOK OF THE SUBGENIUS is in its 20th printing.
Since 1985 Stang has produced THE HOUR OF SLACK syndicated weekly
radio show (on 25 stations, including WREK-Atlanta, as well as dozens
of podcasts). The show has spawned numerous other SubGenius shows in
various cities as well, such as Rev. Susie the Floozy's "Bob's"
Slacktime Fun House in Atlanta).

As a stand-up preacher, Stang is a regular ranter at various large
annual festivals such as Starwood, X-Day, Winterstar, Burning Man, and
the late lamented Fantasy Fairs of Dallas. (He has actually been a
guest of DragonCon twice, most recently in 1995.) Stang produces the
annual SubGenius gathering X-Day (now in its 13th year) and before
that organized various "World SubCons" in Dallas, Chicago and
Baltimore. He is a veteran of roughly 150 nightclub appearances (as
well as art museums like the Walker in Minneapolis), and has had
SubGenius gallery shows at such venues as New York's Psychedelic
Solution. The larger shows have drawn upwards of 750 people. He opened
for GWAR during their 1995 tour.

Stang began life as a filmmaker and is best known for the SubGenius
movie ARISE! (which Film Threat called "one of the 10 must-have indie
films"), the "porno claymation" called "Reproduction Cycle," animation
for DEVO music videos and a truly ahead-of-its-time underground film,
"Let's Visit the World of the Future" of 1973. His films have won many
awards including Cannes for animation, the Dallas Video Festival, the
Chicago International Film Festival and many others. There is a
SubGenius RPG from Steve Jackson Games, and a comic book, "Bob's"
Favorite Comics, from Rip Off Press.

For the last three years Stang has taught an annual 8-week online
course in "Running Your Own Cult" and the 30-year history of the
Church of the SubGenius. This is offered at Robert Anton Wilson's
Maybe Logic Academy, which has as other instructors such writers as
Douglas Rushkoff and R. U. Sirius. Stang's course is one of the most
popular, with roughly 50 students paying full price ($135) each year.

On the Internet, the SubGenius newsgroup alt.slack is considered a
very high-volume Usenet forum; in fact it was one of the first
newsgroups on the Internet! The SubGenius website, started in 1995,
gets from 25,000 visits on a good day to 6,000 on "off" days. It is
one of the largest websites on the Net due to the long history of
artistic and text contributions over a 14-year period, and detailed
reports and videos of the dozens of Church events. When Stang
preaches, he generally brings various props (a giant vinyl "Bob"
portrait, and hangings for a pulpit or lectern) and a DVD of graphics
and animation specially created to go with SubGenius subject matter --
i.e., conspiracies, rival cults, beloved UFO kooks.

Very frequently, at SubGenius nightclub and convention "devivals,"
Stang trades off with local SubGenius ranters. In the Atlanta area
these would almost certainly include Rev. Susie the Floozie (Susan
Barrows) and Priestess Pisces (Khristine VanHall). SubGenius shows
usually also involve local bands. In almost every city there are "Sub-
friendly" bands. Our most frequent collaborators musically are The
Amino Acids, from Detroit. Strangely, the main response to Stang's
heartfelt sermonizing is gales of laughter.

Stang also does panels. At SXSW he was on one about computers and the
Internet with Bruce Sterling; at sf cons he has bantered with various
science fiction authors (mainly the ones listed above as SubGenius
members); at conspiracy cons he's been on panels with Robert Anton
Wilson, Robert Shea, and countless absolute nutcases and rival cult
leaders. Stang is actually a fairly hard-core skeptic so his approach
is usually good-natured kook bashing.

The Church of the SubGenius has kept Stang busy enough that he has not
had to have a "real" job since the early 1990s.

I couldn't tell ya... I get 173.14.96.225 for madscientist.org.uk and
it resolved without any problems on my end.

I guess we could blame it on CARNIVORE, though, and it might even be
true...

Fun fact: DragonCon will be having a presentation about DARPA and its
role in creating the Internet. I wonder if CARNIVORE will be covered
at all, or if it's just going to be Vint Cerf era stuffs...

I dunno. You guys are both in Atlanta, right? It might be a problem
with some main relay in your area. Does the main hub go through
Atlanta (as it's the capital of the state) the way that all Internet
traffic for the State of Ohio is routed through Columbus (which is our
capital)?

I gotta say, though, having something resolve to 1.2.3.4 is kinda cool.

Funny you should mention CARNIVORE.

On the few occasions I used one of those Visual TraceRoute
applications, it shows my first hop is to Langley, WV.

How Odd!

It's probably that app's code that does that.
Commandline Tracert does not show the same thing.
At least I think it doesn't.
I could be mistaken. yay

PS. no, I'm in Kent, WA, clear across the CUNTRY from The Suse.

weirder yet, 173.14.96.225 resolves to wilpig.org when I trace it for
me ... when I enter the IP in a browser, it pulls up wilpig
consulting,

http://joecosby.com/pic/tempwilpig/wilpig.jpg

but then if I enter wilpig.org in a browser, I go to what I guess is a
setup page for some kind of Novell software that wilpig there used to
try to set up his site

http://joecosby.com/pic/tempwilpig/wilpig_novell.jpg

My guess is that Wilbur Longwisch tried to set up his site himself but
doesn't know what the fuck he's doing and did some very strange things
with DNS that propagated and I guess are conflicting somehow with
madcientist.org.uk .

Good luck making a career as an Internet consultant, Wilbur.

Dear Zapanaz,

Hi.

I'm the guy who invited Stang & the rest of the SubGenius crew to
DragonCon. Your guess is wrong. The DNS fuckup was my fault. I
switched DNS providers recently, probably screwed up something with my
secondary (editdns.net), disabled that account when I realized there
were problems, verified everything was working again & the site was
reachable once the correct IP had propagated, & I'll figure out what
my problem was with editdns.net *after* the convention.

Wilpig has hosted madscientist.org.uk and a number of other sites for
various people, conventions & non-profits, at no cost mind you, for
many years. I get better uptime from him than I have from many
commercial ISPs and webhosts it has been my misfortune to pay good
money to. The guy knows what he is doing & makes a nice living at it.

If you want to talk baseless dog-feces about someone, I'm your man. Go
ahead, I have a thick skin. I'll even give you an excuse:

Suck my fat, throbbing, purple-veined one-eyed wonder wiener.

If that's not appealing, you could chill the fuck out, take advantage
of one of the many opportunities to partake of free alcoholic goodness
spread throughout the convention (should you attend), and perhaps even
offer a mea culpa to my buddy Wilpig (public or private, your choice)
(that or a handjob).

FYI, Connie appeared to me in a vision just now & told me to tell you
that she'd drain your balls in a variety of pleasant ways should you
choose the latter option(s).

BTW, hi everybody, I'm Pope jonnyX, Patron Saint of the Airwaves in
the Greater Nashville Metropolitan Area and Surrounding Marketplaces
(retired; how I miss thee, WRVU), and I do Science Stuff at DragonCon.
I hang out with the EFF, Skeptics, and Space crowd, too. Praise "Bob,"
etc.

FAQYDA:

* Space Track Director Rain can be thanked for the Stang & Susie
bios, as well as the website content. She was a pink until she met me
in 2003, which was when I introduced her to both DragonCon and
SubGeniusdom (among other weirdness); never been quite the same since.
She served as my faithful and frequently put-upon assistant for many
years, back when Space & Science were one track, dinosaurs roamed the
Earth, and SkepTrack wasn't even a gleam in our eyes. She kept me in
line (ie - prevented me from blowing stuff up or setting the place on
fire), and was finally rewarded by the Con Head Honchos last year with
a promotion and her own track of programming, at which point Space &
Science were split in two. Now SHE gets to hobnob with all of the
astronauts and rocket scientists (the backstabbing bitch). She needs
to be "Bob"tized desperately, despite her protests to the contrary.
Fabulous prizes are yours, if you can do it in an amusingly public way
& provide me with blackmail material. Keep in mind I'm not bailing
anyone out of jail should things go horribly, horribly wrong.

* Years ago, while at work, I thought to myself, "I should register
madscientist.org if no one has it." That was a good thought, because
no one had it. I then thought to myself, "I'll register it when I get
off work in a couple hours." That was a bad thought. Two hours later,
when I attempted to register it, I discovered to my horror that
someone had beaten me to the punch. That someone was in the UK. So I
registered madscientist.org.uk, emailed the guy who registered
"madscientist.org" and offered to pay his registrar fees for the next
ten year as well as providing free hosting & DNS if he'd swap domains
with me. Bastard never replied. He's never used the domain to host
anything, either. I stopped emailing him after a couple of years, but
I still plan on tracking him down and kicking his ass someday, or just
shaking my finger^H^H^H^H^H^Hpenis at him if he's bigger than me.

FAQIHHAAY

* Stang's had a birthday recently? HOW recently? Note to self - Now I
have to come up with yet ANOTHER amusing way to publicly humiliate him
at the con, dammit.

Feel free to rant away--that's the coin of the realm here. And you're
in luck--this is THE place for all throbbing, purple-veined wonder
weiner posts. In fact, we're required by Internet Law to come up with
one every hour on the hour. Thanks for taking a LOAD off us,
*gigglesnort*

Members of most other groups, upon the reading of such a wonder-weiner-
sucking post, respond with shock as the multimegaton impact of the
figurative weiner blasts out of the screen at them, knocking them flat
on their backs on their snack-wrapper-littered floor, leaving a carbon-
scored, ghostly outline of an idiot on the opposite wall.

SubGeniuses, however, like to LEAN IN to fully enjoy the impact.

So c'mon, blow our hair back. It's too quiet in here.
