I experimented with vegetarianism twice in my life. Once, in high
school, because I started cooking for myself and couldn't bear the
feel of raw meat, and eventually I didn't like eating it even when it
was prepared by someone else. And then again, a few years ago. I got
so much fatter as a vegetarian - it was the heaviest I've ever been!
My butt was big and round and famous. It lasted about a year.

Then Sifu and I went on a vacation with some serious animal rights
fanatics. They lectured us nonstop for about four days about the
evils of meat eating, and how we could probably never repent enough to
the animal kingdom for all the meat we'd eaten over the years, and how
some day the lion would lay down with the lamb. It was relentless,
the preaching.

As soon as we left their home, we went out for a big breakfast of pork
products. Gorge! Filthy! Bacon, sausage AND ham! The grease was
coming out of us for days. Never looked back.

Mission accomplished, animal rights fanatics! It's been about five
years and we haven't even seen them since.

"wellness". I just have to hear that word and I am reaching for my
revolver. It doesn't mean the same thing as "health", you know that
because you almost always see them in a phrase together, "health and
wellness".

It's kind of like "truthiness". It's a PRINCIPLE. An ideal form.
Like "truthiness" it kind of stands for something, "wellness" is
almost something political. Like anything political it's not really a
clear idea so much as a kind of person. A person whose health is
reasonably good but they know they SHOULD be eating vegetarian. Not
for their health, exactly ... but, because they'd be WELL-ER. The
kind of person who not only quit smoking, but did all they could to
see that nobody else smokes. Because maybe somebody smoking 100 feet
away from me downwind isn't a serious threat to my health ... but, I
would be WELL-ER if they weren't there. Even if it's a TINY effect on
me, then I haven't got TOTAL wellness, have I? But it's more than
that ... I mean, I SEE them, those smokers, don't I? And smoking is
DIRTY. How can I have TOTAL wellness if I have to see them? I mean,
we aren't talking about HEALTH, we're talking about WELLNESS.

And really it's the same with a lot of "dirty" issues. Eating meat,
that's DIRTY. Tofu though, that's totally different. Tofu and soy
milk are WELL. It's not just that it's good for you (or so they
thought, anyway), it's WELL.

It's CLEAN.

A TOTAL Wellness-er can't have TOTAL wellness as long as they have to
be around DIRTY people, can they? The dirty people might not affect
you physically, but they affect your mind, and that's part of
well-ness, isn't it?

I haven't been around "total wellness" since college ... I remember
the people in that department, the main "total wellness" teacher
(there was a class called "Total Wellness", that's not a joke in case
you have never seen one before) was a very ... soft-edged man. Which
is not to say he was homosexual ... I remember asking myself that at
the time, and he definitely wasn't, he was married and other staff
afferred that he was hetero ... but he was definitely GAY as shit.
Sort of an extreme mama's-boy kind of person. And I always associate
"total wellness" with that ... there's something inherently feminizing
about it. Something UNMANLY.

That sounds funny coming from me ... I would be the last person in the
world to care about society's ideas about what a manly man should be,
and I suppose I do have a lot of androgynous habits, but on the other
hand a boy is a boy and a girl is a girl, they're DIFFERENT, which I
think is GOOD. It makes life INTERESTING.

I'm going to not shave today in honor of being a boy.

There was always something ... not feminizing, but anti-masculizing in
the whole total wellness thing. Somehow it seemed like most things
male were in that vaguely DIRTY category by total wellness standards.
I suppose a lot of habits that are stereotypically considered male
were precisely against the total wellness ethos ... smoking, drinking,
eating meat. But not just those, but fuzzier things were kind of
against the SPIRIT of total wellness ... rough talk and dirty words,
fighting physically, cynicism and dark humor ... not, really,
necessarily male things, but in that vague, fuzzy area.

PRINCIPLES are great for creating vague, fuzzy areas. People DO tend
to fill that god-shaped hole in them with some other religion, even if
they don't think of it as a religion. The human brain is a
religion-inventing machine.

My boss at the college where the total wellness people were was Jeff
Peretti, a big, hairy, macho, cynical Italian. He hated them, and
they hated him. He was a great boss, for exactly that reason. He
fucked with them every opportunity he got, and they passively
aggressed him right back (because Totally Well people are NEVER
aggressive directly ... that would imply that something was not Well).
He had stretched out his Marine corps veteran's benefits for something
like five or seven years, pursuing a two year degree.

When I got there he was finally running out of benefits and was going
to have to go get a real job, so he was turning the veteran's office
over to me. Right about the end of his time there, his cousin or
somebody was getting married and they arranged to have the wedding at
the college.

Everybody got drunk off their asses, and a huge, utterly pointless
fight broke out. They TRASHED the place. I seem to recall that
somebody drove their car through a window in addition to food flung
about the place, tables broken, so on and so on.

They didn't bother to fire Jeff, only because he was leaving already.
I'm sure it was just a coincidence that he trashed the college on his
way out the door.

ALL HAIL THE UNWELL!

Can't stand most fanatics. Especially vegetarians on a mission. I
don't mind well-made vegetarian meals, but I need my proteins and the
taste of MEAT or fish.

Good thing is that vegetarians are normally totally overwhelmed when
confronted with a bit of cruelty. For example, if they are lecturing
and you muse about buying a big heap of minced meat and fucking it.

Usually stops these kinds of conversation rather fast, and if not, I
can still just *do* it. But so far I never had to go that far.

When I was young and stupid(er), the first time I was on my own and had
money enough for only ONE can of vegetables, I was dumb enough to buy a
can of sauerkraut.

The whole situation was pathetic, and I'm mad at myself for bringing it up.

People shore do get confused and consternated easy. Like when you
tell them, Yes, vegan, and Yes, in favor of animal testing for pure
research. That happened to me a lot in college. At UC Berkeley,
so... ya can picture it. There would be all these protests against
vivisection and stuff, and they just couldn't cope with hearing a
fellow righteous food avoider fighting to keep scientific monkey-
killing legal. Ach- those pesky shades of grey.

But anyway, the answer is clear, you aren't a REAL vegetarian until
you lose a ball.

Captured Jewish chemists were ordered to create an oral morphine
substitute for all the German officers who were whacked out of their
heads and getting infections from the whopping big needles they used
back then.

So they invented a drug that seems to work at first, but becomes even
more addictive than the original. And you don't get infections, but if
you use it long-term, your bones turn to rubber. Which tends to make
the jackboots and black uniforms fit kind of funny.

Sauerkraut farts are heavier than air so they displaced all the oxygen in
the trenches. The Nazi salute was a stylized form of the frantic arm
waving performed by German WWI troops attempting to circulate fresh air
into the trenches.

The Brits and the Yanks renamed sauerkraut "liberty cabbage."

Coincidence?
