It looks like the guy did his homework. The Roche limit is the distance
from the earth where the earth's tidal forces would tear a large body
apart. The earth did have ring(s) at some point after the collision that
created the Moon.

Following the phase gate accident of 2021, a large chunk of the moon was
ripped away and the rubble formed a LEO cloud of debris which rains down
occasionally onto the ruined surface of the Earth in Cowboy Bebop. Actually
some pretty cool looking stuff.

Impressive. I wonder how the existence of planetary rings like these would
affect the development of civlization. Would scientific enquiry develop even
sooner - "where did they come from"? Or would superstition - "the riings in
the sky *obviously* are artificial" - hold sway over humankind a lot longer
and be more prevalent today, instead of being confined to such backward
places as Iran and Tennessee? Sounds like good fodder for a story.

There would be two differences. Naturally the priests would be forced
to deny their existence altogether. Secondly, they would create an
army of unstoppable zealots and send them to crush anyone who defied
the church and dared to see the rings.

Steve

No one really thinks the Moon or any other normal local celestial phenomena is
