If anyone here is in touch with Mr. Pramer, please pass this on.
Anyone at all, who is interested in the OLPC program, might want to
looksee the latest concept; a thin all-screen unit, kind of an iPhone
for the real world.

Did you notice they will sell for less than $100!!!!

I'll buy 3 n give two to the lads next door...

and this is good:

Quinn: were currently looking at possibilities for charging via
induction, trying to keep the number of ports or holes in the system
down to zero if possible that makes a much higher degree of dust and
water proofing possible. The question is how robust the wireless
interface and charging solutions can become by then.

The most likely answer, going solely on the past history of computer
development, is "just give it enough time". And not all that much time,
either.

This Xistmas, I helped my SO buy a new bicycle for her teenager. That cost
more than these things will. Me wants.

As I recall, they showed pictures of the OLPC for a year before it was
really available. And the price went up, and some of the farthest-out
features disappeared, but it was still a pretty cool toy. Most kids in
North America are too jaded to appreciate its coolness, though. It's
for the masses of youngsters who won't have to un-learn Windows and
FaceBook.

That's why Uruguay is my favorite South American countries: they've
already disbursed 360,000 of them. Time to move to Montevideo!

Uruguay was the first country to have reached, in 2009, full coverage
of their primary students (and their teachers) population by the
OLPC's (One Laptop Per Child) XO through the Plan Ceibal. Due to their
telecommunication infrastructure, students from primary schools from
all over the country are able to access the Internet and its
corresponding huge resources base. The Plan Ceibal included training
of primary teachers to use the XO system, to maximize results. This
represented a total of 350,000 primary students and their 16,000
teachers.

Me, too!

How does this work? Are there centers for trading in children for
laptops? Do they care how I obtained the children?

See Smerker for details on that.

That's a pretty bad exchange rate. One child on the open market should
get you 10 - 20 real laptops.
