i think world was at it's peak around 1992 and 1993. it seems as if
lately world is marketing mainly to younger kids with it's 'devil man'
graphics etc. yes, world was/is home to some of the best skaters ever,
but i don't really like what they have been doing for the past few
years. rocco must be doing something right though, because he can
survive and keep making money even after losing almost all his riders,
changes in skateboarding, and many more problems that would cause a lot
of companies to lose popularity.

I think that World Industries' glory days are over. I really don't
think that its height was in 96. I think it was around 94. That is
when the Roccocompanies had all the best riders. Since they all
revolted to ride for Girl/Chocolate, World Industries has never been the
same.
You are definitely right that it has been an influential company.
Besides putting out some of the best videos ever (W.I.'s Rubbish Heap,
Blind's Video Days, Plan B's Questionable, and 101's Falling Down are
all classics) they set many trends that eventually swept the whole
market (lighter & thinner boards, rip-off graphics, Ghetto Wear cargos,
focusing boards). But nowadays there are plenty of companies with
better riders, products, and ideas.
Damn! Think of the heads that used to ride for them.
Eric Koston, Rick Howard, Mike Carroll, Guy Mariano, Paulo Diaz, Danny
Way, Colin McKay, Natas Kaupas, Jeremy Klein, Ron Chatman, Jeff Hartsel,
Felix Arguelles, Tom Boyle, Mike Vallely, Jason Lee, Mark Gonzales, Gino
Ianucci, Henry Sanchez, Andy Stone, Ryan Fabre, Chico Brenes, Jesse
Martinez, Chris Pastras, Markovich, McNatt.
Anyway, I'm sure that Rocco is still making bank, but compared to the
old Rocco Kingdom, World Industries does kind of suck now.

NO SHIT DUDE!! I couldnt have said it better myself. I love
industries. I was dissapointed when i was in the only "real" skate
shop in my city( real meaning owned by someone who knows what the fuck
hes doin. theres this other bigger one owned by these burnout
heabangers who dont know shit) and someone called on the phone and
asked if they had some flamboy deck in stock. After he hung up the
phone he started mocking the kid on the phone and saying that he should
get off of industreis nuts. all they care about is the money. Man fuck
that!! I have only owned one deck that i actually REALLY liked. and
was world mother fucking industries baby!! and from my experiences, on
the contrary to what other people have said in this thing, zoo york
sucks i just broke a zoo york today that i have only had for three
weeks. It was too heavy and had shitty pop.
yeah, especially gino iannucci's section. nollie 180 fakie five-o to
pop shove-it out on a table. everything he does looks so good.

What do you think is the most 'influential skate group' at the moment?
And why? I dont really know myself, words like Girl/Chocolate, Toy
Machine and Zooyork pop in my head but I can't see clearly who is king
at the moment.
What do you think will happen in the Future? My guess would be Shorty's
if they keep on team building like they do (Muska, Olson, who's next) or
maybe Foundation will try once more (they seem to be on the case, I mean
"duty now for the future"?) maybe in the next couple of years. I really
don't know. There is a big chance that the Girl kingdom will grow even
more powerfull, but I think their weak point is that their collection of
decks doesnt give much variation.
Paul.
shit! i consider them to be light and with plenty of pop.

i don't think zoo wil become the next world. they already fucked up when
they didn't pay any of the riders on "illuminati" for like 3 months.

I think girl/chocolate has already taken over as the leaders and will
hold that title for a while. Does anybody remember that ad where they
had all the riders for both teams lined up against the fence? That was
when I realized how SUPERIOR their TEAM was. I'll agree with you that
the boards don't vary all that much (they're my favorites though) but
the wood is rad and the concave is perfect (for me).
I still haven't seen any A-Team boards, I'd be curious to see what
THEY are like.......

Some one mentioned that Rocco sold evrything he had owned, except
the A-Team, to K2. K2 makes snowboards and in-line stuff, so I could see
how they would want to get into skating. I haven't heard much about that
since, but I'd imagine they want to keep it real quiet if it happened.
Another thing I was wondering about was whether Dukes would still exist
since jeremy Wray went with Way and PlanB away from world, but thats an
intirely seperate issue.

lavar has been back on blind for some time now. i think the most
influential skate company right now is girl/chocolate as well. world
still has a pretty big influence on things though. their team is one of
the best, though it is not really well rounded. all the most influential
teams before (like plan b) had a variety of styles, like street tech,
big street type stuff, and vert.

This is my theory: Just like certain tricks and styles of skating
domainate skating for certain time periods, some companies dominate
skating for similar time periods.
During the 80's it was Powell, then there was the H-Street period,
then early ninties it was world industries, PlanB got real big after
that (I know its the same company, but they got big on their own in my
opinion), then Deluxe did its thing, then Alien, and very recently Toy
Machine has been that big company. Why and how these companies got big
is subject to alot of speculation, If somebody knew exactly what do to
they would make some money. Nevertheless there are some interesting
factors that seem to play a role, videos for example. Powell, H-Street,
World, PlanB, and Toy Machine were definately helped into their
positions by hugely popular videos. Note that this does not apply to all
of them; the Alien videos came out before and after Alien was huge, the
biggest video from the Deluxe camp during their glory days was Stereo's.
There are alot of other factors to consider as well; like quality of the
team, are they taking skating to a new level, and have they captured our
imaginations? Its kinda tough to consider the above so I'll just leave
them at that.
As for the future, Toy Machine is definately not going to be as big
any more just because Thomas and Toy seperated. I don't think Zero is
gonna get big because, other than Thomas fans, people don't seem that
into it. The board companies that, in my opion, have the best chances of
being huge next are Girl/Chocolate, Zoo, and Element. Girl can do it
without shape variation, Alien was huge without it, and they also have
the movie abilities. I have definately seen alot more people riding
their boards recently, but I think that they will not be the one because
Mouse wasn't as big of a success as Welcome to Hell. I don't thing Zoo
is gonna do it primarily because of the distribution issues which have
plagued them over the years, simply they have a hard time getting boards
made and to the people who order them. They are supposedly coming out
with a video soon, which could be amazing and then we'll see. I think
that Element is gonna be the next big thing; The biggest video success
of recent memory was EE3 and Wolfe is making their video as well, the
pro team is a crazy mix of new and old, but they definately are
attempting to put together one of the best teams ever. Thats my vote.
Yet another thing to conside is that maybe a shoe company will be
the next big thing, DC has been huge for some time, amazing team, if
they made a good video it would sell like hell. Thats enough from me.
