Mercedes have improved their engines quite a bit in recent decades. I
remember when the world's fastest 300SL set a record at the Bonneville salt
flats. It had a Chevy engine innit.
They supply (I don't know which) F1 Grand Prix engines, don't they?

I have no reason to doubt it. It was featured in Hot Rod magazine at the
time. They had no reason to lie.
At the time, it was much more common to put either Ford or Chevy small block
V-8's in Jaguars. In fact they replaced the entire drive line. XKE? The
ones from the 60's that were teardrop shaped. Pretty, but absolute sloggers
when stock.
