Passers-by thought coffin in street was surreal art
A coffin was left lying in the road after a car crash in Chile because
police and passers-by thought it was a surreal art performance.
A car carrying the body of Nelson Contreras was hit by a truck in Eistein,
leaving the coffin and flowers in the street.
It was thought to be an art installation in homage to surreal painter
Roberto Matta Echaurren, who had died that day.
No-one helped the Contreras family to pick up the coffin or gather the
scattered flowers.
Osvaldo Brandt, nephew of the dead man, told La Cuarta newspaper: "The whole
thing was surreal. The truck hit us so hard the coffin and all the flowers
came down in the middle of the road."
He added: "After almost one hour we managed to get a cab, put the coffin
inside and continue our way to the cemetery."
