Well, gang, I just got back from SoBe & the Strokes' concert @
BillboardLive. An FOAF got me a last-minute steal @ Loew's little Art
Deco Palais, so I high-tailed it south for some sun, fun *&*
crowd-surfing.

& how!!

JC & the Strokes were simply a Revelation -- they don't just live up to
the hype, they transcend it; they're better than ANYthing ANYone has
said about them.

Believe it!!

THIS gal can't even begin to describe the Excitement of it all, gang --
I've ALways been envious of critterz who were around for the advent of
the Stones, Velvets, Doors, Who, etc., &, now -- like a bolt from the
blue -- it's ~happening~ in 2002.

(!!)

The concert was excellent, despite *2* UBER-sucky opening acts. The
Strokes were e-f-f-o-r-t-l-e-s-s-l-y great (sounded exactly (eerily)
like the album, actually) & they looked *every* bit the instant-icons
they've become. Depending on the ^r>i^p<t^i^d>e of the mosh-pit, I was
between 2-7 "rows" directly in front of Julian. &, come to think of it,
I can't remember *ever* being groped & grabbed SO much. At one point,
there was 1 hand on each of my fanny-cheeks, 2 on each hooter &
someone(s) was pawing my front.

(Jerks!!)

Anywho, the tiny gal I went w/ (met her & her BF on the beach the day
before) had to be lifted up by this big dude next to us (dead ringer for
Henry Rollins) & passed to a suckurity critter b/c the poor, precious
thing couldn't breathe.

It was funny later -- when Julian leaned into the crowd -- I spied the
Rollins look-alike stick his big hand down the back of Julian's
underpants. (brick-red briefs).

(!!)

After the set -- when I was going up to the after-party -- I bumped into
him & asked him if he was or wasn't ever going to wash his hands after
feeling JC's butt.. He laughed & said, "Hey, I'm not a fag, but I
wouldn't kick Julian out of bed."

*LOLOL*

The after-party was Fun, Fun, Fun. The band couldn't have been nicer.
I talked 1-on-1 w/ Julian for about 20 minutes. He was totally wasted
(actually, I think he's permanently wasted), but he's obviously
brilliant & very charming. He's a bit self-conscious re: talking about
"intellectual, artistic" topix , so our conversation quickly devolved
into making fun of people in the room & giddy laughter. While we were
chatting, some older guy came up to us, smiled at me & yelled into
Julian's ear to beware of "predatory rock chicks".

I like that SO much I think I'll use it as my new handle.

*LOL*

Anywho, I don't know if that was some kind of cue or what, but Julian
then asked me if I wanted to have sex w/ him in MY room @ Loew's. (!!)
I don't know if he was serious -- he asked it like he was asking for
another cup of coffee, & he was waaaaay too wasted to diddle, but I
said, "not on our first date." [I really don't have this groupie thing
down too well, do I?] So I told him I'd see him on the upcoming
Euro-tour for our second date. As I was getting up to leave, he
plaintively grabbed my hand and said, "hey, I'm supposed to be a fucking
superstar. Why didn't you ask for my fucking autograph?" So -- I got
lipstick & a piece of paper from my handbag & told him to sign the name
"Orpheus". He looked confused, then traumatized, said no & signed the
name "Jules".
So, I said thanx & gave him a big kiss on his pouting cheek, & he pulled
me down onto his lap & gave me a big kiss on the neck. We started
making out (or something), but he was waaaaaaay too wasted & getting
weird, so I got up, gave him 1 last kiss, & high-tailed it back to
Loew's moonlight jacuzzis, to give my moshpit-battered bod a DEEP soak.

While I was soaking my bones & trying to ignore the usual tourist
small-talk from X, Y, & Z, I kept thinking about Julian's *face* -- yes,
it's Beautiful, but it has an amazing display of emotions & humanity
when he's off-stage & chit-chatting. He'd make a *great* actor -- I'd
love to see him do a punk-opera of HAMLET.

He's even half Dane.........;-)

Hugs,
Janice, whose mind needs a deep-soak after five days of the SoBe
lifestyle, where things don't start cooking 'til 2 AM. I think I was
the first to leave the Strokes' after-party @ 4AM.

;-)

What kind of music does this band play? If it's really good, I'll download
it via Morpheus (the new Napster) to my puter.

It reminds me of punk, short songs and simple chords, terrible singing
(sorry Peeps but the dude *is* out of tune, although it does give me
hope for a singing career). I kind of like it. never would have heard
of them if not for Peeps though.

Well, after all, it *is* a R&R-band, not a Presbyterian picnic
sing-along, but I guess I like all "out of tune" rockers -- Mick Jagger,
Jim Morrison, Lou Reed, Dylan, Neil Young, etc. etc.

The deeper-voiced rockers tend to *shout* into the mic more than "sing",
anyway.

Again, tho', I think JC's voice, phrasing & lyrics are 100% perfect-O.

Cool. Did you get the album?! What songs do you like?!

*I* was actually screaming & throwing my head around like a Beatlemaniac
@ BillboardLive during the choruses for "Modern Age" & "Hard to
Explain". (Never thought I'd do that *any*where. Gawd) The music was
just soo beautiful & electrifying that I just could *not* stand it. I
wanted to put my hands over my ears, too, but my arms were
strait-jacketed in the mosh pit.

My *Gotham* galpal never even heard of 'em, either. How weird is that?!
I told her about them so much since Oct. that she finally got the CD.
She didn't like it much at all, but her hubby *did* & now she's blaming
*me* for turning a responsible 35 yr. old into a headbanger.

Sorry, hon, I was 100% apolitical before the 'tOOn-hour, & now that the
legacy-less Blubba has wholly evaporated off the collective unconscious,
I'm back into Apathy, & being apolitical.

Actually, my visceral hatred for 'tOOnces was a good thing, b/c it

Yes and no. When he sang in his lower register and kept
soft, he was in tune - think "People Are Strange".
When he got higher and louder, he was screaming. Think
the end of "Light My Fire" where he screams "Try to set
the night on Fiyur-uh". Effective, perfect for that
song, but not good singing.

YMMV. IMO and all the other appropriate phrases.

Ask him what happened to the money, then he'll say what money, and you
say the money they spent on the singing lessons. Sorry I had to say
that corny old joke. Who is his family? He is cute looking. I notice
Albert "It Never Rains In Southern California" Hammond's son is the
guitarist. Did you meet him what was he like?

Good for you he will respect you for it, if he remembers anything that
is. Sounds like a really nice guy, LOL. I guess if I were in his
position I'd be the same way, that is how almost *all* rock stars are it

The young Lithuanian woman who cleans my house (at my landlord's expense,
comrades) recently put one of their discs on my machine to relieve the
drudgery of her work. Since I often work at home these days, I've allowed
her the privilege on the condition that she never play on it a Beatles tune,
anything from the '60s, disco music, Peter, Paul & Mary (and Baby Too),
anything with a guitar, Simon & Garfinkle, Madonna, The Who, "Stairway to
Heaven," Zamfir, or anything conducted by the late, unlamented Leonard
Bernstein. On the day in question I was suddenly startled by a wailing
voice singing "This is Shit." I bounded upstairs, intending to scold her
for violating the condition concerning hippy music. She sweetly tried to
reassure me that the group was of recent vintage, and showed me the plastic
box & accompanying printed materials as corroborating evidence. One of the
gaunt-looking lads was heavily pimpled. Is this Julian? In any case, I
reluctantly approved the Stroke music as within the terms of our agreement
and the wailing and screeching continued.

Hogarth
Still in shock, btw, after yesterday when I found an Absolut advertisement
in my dentist's copy of People magazine that featured a photograph of both
Yoko & John naked, repulsive back-sides to the camera, evidently taken in
the course of one of their infamous sleep-ins for peace/self-promotion. In
response to this affront to common decency and civic virtue, never will I
touch a drop of that *low* spirit, and I may stick to gin entirely from now
on. But it will take years of heavy drinking, & perhaps a Stroke or two, to
obliterate that image from my mind.

Fabulously, perfectly IMO. I think our diff may be over the def. of
singing. I guess I just never liked "in tune" male-singing -- it sounds
kind of effeminate to me. Even Frank Sinatra sounds kind of milky &
femme to moi.

I like guys to yell, sneer & slur when they "sing".

*LOL*

Well, I'm hoping only a handful of people actually read ASG. The last
thing I want to do is make 'em popular too fast.

Well, Jules sometimes looks like Jim (wasn't that a Truffaut flick?!),
so maybe that's it.

Strokes' sound, b/c -- to me -- it's just the perfect distillation of

Casablancas pere is John of ELITE. John dumped Mom (ex Miss Denmark)
for a teen-dream when Julian was 5 or 6, and father & son haven't been
close since.

Julian's step-dad got him turned on to the Doors.

>He is cute looking.

Here's 2 instant-classic pix of Julian:

http://www.angelfire.com/indie/casablancas/julian05.jpg

http://www.angelfire.com/indie/strokespix/b071.jpg

I also purrrloined an autographed-pic that was on a chair @ the
after-party. (BAD girl!!) I just *had* to have it, tho' -- Julian looks
INcredible in it -- in concert wearing a sweaty MM t-shirt.

>I notice
>Albert "It Never Rains In Southern California" Hammond's son is the
>guitarist.

That's one of my guilty pleasures. It's a *terrible* thing to admit,
but I ALways liked that tune. I'm dying to know what Albert Jr.
*really* thinks of it, tho'.

:-)

>Did you meet him what was he like?

Yeh, I was on the fringe of a group that was chatting with Albert for
about 15 minutes after I first got there. The chit-chat was mostly re:
places in New York & plans for an upcoming So. American tour. I was
"surreptitiously" looking for Julian, so I didn't say too much, but I
did ask Albert some stupid question about Australia. He's *very* nice,
tho'; I think he's the "sensible", grounded Stroke. He's *much* better
looking IRL than in most pix, where he kind of looks like a mongoose.

Fab (the drummer) *is* Fab & *so* adorable He looks about 16 & he came
up to me & *hugged* me. He reminds me of one of the Marx bros. Chico
or Harpo. The 3 or 4 times our eyes met across the room, I couldn't
stop from gigglin' like a schoolgirl.

The last 2 bandmates (Nick Valensi (TALL guy) & Nikolai Fraiture) were a
TAD strange & spacey -- in a cool, ET-ish way. Some man (who must've
been reading for a David Lynch movie) *circled me* *3 times* to tell me
that both their mothers were from France, as if it was monumental news
or something. I don't even know if it's true.

(?!)

Anywho, I spent most of my time talking to this *really* funny,
good-looking guy from SoCal who was wanting to film the Strokes'
concerts for 'em on a "friendship" basis.

I've been chatting w/ him in email since I got home, & he's going to
send me a bunch of tapes he made of different bands like the Ramones &
early Nirvana.

The Strokes org apparently wasn't interested. As I suspected.

Very dubious.

>Sounds like a really nice guy, LOL.

He's *very* cute when he growls. Like a beautiful, hurt puppy
dog.......:-)

Underneath all the "fuck this, fuck that" urban-armor, of course, is a
sweet-as-pie, supremely sensitive Soul.

I think Holden Caulfield actually wrote & sang IS THIS IT..........:-)

>I guess if I were in his
>position I'd be the same way, that is how almost *all* rock stars are
it
>seems.

I think the main prob w/ rock stars is that suddenly they can have
*anything* they want & they can't handle it, b/c they subconsciously
don't feel they deserve it.

I'm hoping -- given Julian's privileged background -- that that won't be
too much of a prob, but, then there's the issue of ober-icon status (a
la Morrison & Monroe) which I think JC's heading for, esp. if the
Strokes' sophomore-album is even *nearly* as great as their debut.

After an ober-icon peaks, the pressure of not living up to his/her
Mythic image causes MAJOR probs. & JC's ALready *starting out* under
pressure -- being dubbed the Savior of Rock&Roll.

Hugs,
Janice, also noting that *most* rock stars come from the middle or
upper-middle classes. They're not from the gutter, like a lot of people
think. La Jagger even went to the London School of Econ.

I'll have to ask my daughter about the Strokes. If you "like guys to yell,
sneer & slur when they "sing" do you also like chicks who do the same? 'Cos
my little angel is lately into "combat rock" - performing it on stage, no
less. Her band just opened for GWAR. I tell you, my Xanax prescription's

Thank God she also likes the great blues singers, male & female.

By The Who. "J&J" was a dis' of 2 NME-critix who *loved* then-emerging
punk & *hated* rock "dinosaurs" like The Who. Pete Townshend wrote it
after the 2-some penned a "good riddance" 'obit' re: Keith Moon.

Interestingly, NME's the music rag that's prolly gone *most* ga-ga re:

Damn I missed it. This work is getting in the way of watching TV. I
always wanted to see Darling, Julie Christie is my favorite actress.

BTW I saw Some Like It Hot and i wasn't impressed. Didn't you say you
would refund my blockbuster rental fee? ;-) in fact it was late so i had
to pay double. I'm just not into the older films as much I didn't
chuckle once through the whole movie. Marilyn was pretty good though,
I'll give it that. I don't see how it got the Funniest Film of All-Time
monikor though.

I did however get to see Carnal Knowledge last night on some channel one
of my favorites. Ever seen that? Classic Nicholson, and also had
Ann-Margaret.

I have a Voidoids CD. "Blank Generation" it's pretty good. I think u are
right though, they do sound more like VU. Richard Hell was married to
Patty Smyth from Scandal and they had a child. She is now married to
John Macenroe. I think he has a website www.richardhell.com which
featues his poetry and writings.

No, I'd find something more appropriate for a children's dentist...perhaps
Grimm's Anti-Semitic Horror Stories.

This is their Penance.

Heaven needs cleaning women, after all.

Speaking of relief from drudgery, tho', I was strolling down the aisle
of Doug's Market 'bout a month ago -- feeling like a Stepfordized-schlep
-- when suddenly the Muzak turned to music & I heard the faint strains
of the Strokes' "Last Nite" overhead. I don't know *what* possessed me,
but I yelled @ the kid behind the customer service desk to "Crank it,
M****f****!!" (which he did immediately (out of fear, I think), & I just
started doing something like a crazed Charleston in the dairy aisle.
(!@#$%?!) Before I even realized *what* I was doing, I was kicking
egg-cartons up over into the produce section & -- before long -- the
contents of the *entire* aisle were all over the floor.

(!!)

The *only* thing that stopped me was a stun-gun (!!) & 2 "gal"-cops
leading me out of Doug's in hand-cuffs.

Why, Lord?!

Well, after the humiliation of a mug shot (w/ my hair plastered w/
egg-substitute & dusted in pancake flour) *&* a write-up in the local
blotter (jerks!!), my court-appt'd atty. decided upon a defense of
"tarantism".

Normally, I wouldn't like to perp a fraud on the court, but THIS gal

She still is, did you see her in "Afterglow" from 1997? She was
awesome, probably her best performance since McCabbe and Mrs. miller.
She was rightfully nominated for an Oscar but lost to Helen Hunt
(LOL!!!) for As Good As it Gets. One of those undeserved Oscars for
sure. She even has a couple of new movies out and she will be 61 this
year and still looks pretty good.

I was just kidding Peeps thanks anyway, I know you are good for, it a
person of their word. although the rental and late fees for 5 movies I
barely watched set me back almost 40 dollars. The late fees are more
than renting the movies. Something like 3.75. I work so much and i was
so busy I forgot I even had them.

He was decadent in this movie. I liked Ann-Margaret until I started
hearingt bad things about her as a person, off-screen, like she was a
real bitch. Not sure if it's true or not. of course Jack has quite the
rep himself.

I thought some of the members of Television had formed Luna,a pretty
good band from the 90's. They may still be around, maybe not in the
original form. One punk I'd *love* to see live is Patti Smith. I wish i
was in my 20's during the 70's punk scene in NYC, CBGB's and all that.

I bought the Strokes CD today and it absolutely reminds me of the VU,
not the Doors at all. I really like it, I haven't listened to every song
yet though.

Double-checked the talent roster & Television's *definitely* on it.
It's called the *All Tomorrow's Parties* music fest; apparently, it's an
annual event that's been in the UK during previous yrs. & is debuting in
the US @ UCLA this yr.

So, looks like Television *is* still together.

Or, at least, will be in March.

well I like both of them, Marquee Moon and Blank Generation. They don't
really sound like the Strokes note for note but they remind me of the
whole 70's punk movement, which they were a huge part of.

My CD's tend to get messed up in the car so i have to be careful. I've
bought 3 or 4 copies of some CD's that I've worn out, or abused

Sometimes I think a lot of those bands are over-rated b/c otherwise
they'd just evaporate from memory & music history.

But -- b/c of the simple fact they're punk bands -- they have to be
revered & remembered.

That'd be so unStrokes-like. They've refused to even make a real music
video. (Julian's said that lip-synching is "retarded".) The "video" for
"Last Nite" is just them live. & -- after seeing the Strokes in concert
-- I can tell you that the vid's "director", Roman Coppola, did ZIP but
sit on his ass & watch while the Strokes performed.

If you remember to take Vitamin C + B-12 w/ a big glass of H20 before
you crash, you should feel OK in the AM.

I just read the Tylenol and it said about the if you drink more than
three drinks you shhouldn't take it. I don'ty have any Advil which is
ibruprofren not anecetwhateveritis in Tylenol so i'm not sure. usually
if I get wasted I don't think about taking anything just pass out. I
know that sounds bad but that's life. I almost never drink anymore
anyway I have taken 180 degree turn in my lifestyle without the help of
any rehabs or other chemicals to get me through. Just once in awhile I

Have you ever heard of an analgesic called Wobenzym?! When I was in

Apparently, t's the #1 or #2 OTC analgesic sold in Germany & is also
very popular among elite-athletes. Supposedly, it not only has ZIP
side-effex (it's safer than aspirin!) but it's actually *good* for you
-- it boosts your immunity & cleans all the crap (toxins, free-radicals)
from your blood!!

I never tried it, but it's s'posed to be available state-side.

on-stage; he picked it up, lit it, toked it & said, "I just don't
understand this rock and roll w/out drugs."

Oh -- you were talking about Julian *Lennon*......

Oops........:-)
