Check out my article about a really embarrassing encounter that I had with a
celeb. I humiliated myself bigtime. But, hey, I bet some of you folks also
had embarrassing celeb encounters as well.

Right, Peeps?

Heh. A friend of mine ran into Downtown Julie Brown (who he likes a lot) at a
clothing store. When she realized he recognized him and turned and gave him a
big old smile, he froze like a deer in the headlights and ran screaming from
the place . . . .

Very funny!!! Mine isn't as bad as yours :) But once many years ago when
I worked as a desk clerk at the Atlanta Hilton George Carlin walked up
to the desk to be checked in.. All I could do was stand there with my
mouth hanging open while he waited for me to say or do something.. I
couldn't I was frozen!! Finally another clerk noticed I was having
trouble and walked over and checked him in..the whole time he kept
looking at me like I was some kind of dork..which I guess I was..

While in university, I was at a demonstration protesting something or other,
and I noticed Eric Peterson marching alongside.
(For non-Canucks, he's a great actor who starred in Billy Bishop Goes To
War, Street Legal, and tons of other Canadian series).
Having loved his work for years, I nudged a friend who was with me and
babbled, a little too loudly "IT'S ERIC PETERSEN! LOOK, ERIC PETERSEN.
(pointing) ERIC PETERSEN!". He looked over, and had obviously heard me. I
tried to go over and tell him how big a fan I was, but evidently discomfited
by my bellowing his name over and over, he melted away into the crowd as
fast as he could.

So, I lost the chance to meet one of my favourite actors. But at least I did
get to have breakfast with Ken Dryden once, though that's another story.

Mine is just goofy. I was in the secretarial pool at a Very Prestigious
Monthly Magazine (10 years ago), and got sent to their photo department to
answer phones while they were having a party (Helmut Newton was there, but
he's not the celeb in question). As I started to answer a call, and the
caller started talking to me, some idiot chick came up to me and started
yakking, so I completely missed what the caller was saying. Here's how the
conversation then went:

"I'm sorry sir, could you repeat your name?"

[exasperated sigh] "BROKAW. TOM. BROKAW." [pause] "B-R-O-K-A-W. TOM BROKAW."

That isn't quite so goofy, the goofy part is that I then got totally rattled
and started trying to redeem myself, which mainly consisted of my babbling
that of course I knew who he was, I watch him all the time, that I just
couldn't hear, etc. etc., to which he replied, "Yeah. Right."

(Of course, the juciest part is that a couple of years later a few co-
workers were gossiping about how one of the female photographers was
supposedly having an affair with Tom Brokaw--and that's who he had been
calling when I took the call!)

Oh...I'm sickened to share this. I visited my brother in LA, and
being a bodybuilder, it's always been a dream to go to Gold's Gym in
Venice (ok, I'm easy to please). I saw a number of the top
bodybuilders that only about five other people would recognize, but I
did see Michael T. Weiss from "The Pretender" series.

Now, I *hate* doing the awestruck fan thing (I'm not particularly a
fan of his), but I did want to meet him just for bragging rights (I
have a very deprived group of friends).

Anyway, I'm doing the handshake & nice to meet ya' thing, when I
suddenly blurt, "Yeah, and I liked that movie you were in..."
realizing that I've totally forgotten the title to "Jeffery", so I'm
doing this tongue stumbling thing of, "Yeah, you know, with the guy?
That one guy? You know what I'm talking about, right?" Of course,
he's not helping but standing there all smug. I sure as hell didn't
want to say, "You know, the movie where you were gay?"

I lived in the East Village for two years (93 - 95). On New Year's Eve, 1993 or
94 I was bar hopping with a group of friends. We ended up at The No Tell Motel
on Avenue A. Someone said Boy George was having his after show party there.
Being a huge Boy George fan, I got really excited that he was supposed to be
there. However, while we were there he didn't show up. One of my friends
started throwing up on the floor and I offered to walk her home as I was ready
to turn in myself. I got her safely to her apartment and instead of going home
myself I went back to The No Tell Motel to see if Boy George was going to show
up. After about an hour of hanging outside the bar watching the limos come and
go with no George (or any celebrity for that matter) I finally saw someone
familar get out of a limo and go towards the bar. It was Scott Thompson from
Kids In The Hall. I was so excited (and tipsy) that I yelled "Scott Thompson!."
He turned and looked at me and I couldn't think of a thing to say. So, I yelled
really loud "I LOVE YOU!". He smiled and went in. I was so embarassed. I mean,
there were a lot of people milling about and he wasn't that far away. And I
didn't love him that much (although I do like him a whole lot). Oh well, it's
not like I puked on him or anything.

I wouldn't, but I thought Selleck was
gay . . . I'd love to get your take on
that.

Let's see, I've met Johnny Cash and
Richard Dreyfuss and both encounters
were completely forgettable and
innocuous. My main impression of
the various celebrities I've seen is that
their hair tends to be lighter than I
expect--with the exception of Mr. Cash.

I was at a restaurant in London with a friend who had a crush on Pierce
Brosnan. Guess who is sitting to the table next to us? Yes, the man himself.
During the meal, my friend just stares at him, not taking her eyes off him
for a second. Of course he noticed the starring and asked for a different
table.

I lived in Athens, GA for several years. Went to see the B-52's at the 40 Watt
Club with several of my friends. Michael Stipe was dancing in front of us, and
one of my friends jabbed him with her elbow while dancing a little too
energetically. He turned around and glared at her, and the friend on my other
side, who hadn't seen the reason for the glare, tossed her drink on him for
glaring at HER best friend...

I knew him _just_ barely, and spent the next week apologizing for it every time
I ran into him...he was really nice about it, said it happens to him more often
than you'd think.

Here's something really embarrassing I saw at a NKOTB concert 8 yr. ago in
Sweden. There was this girl who had a crush or something for Danny Wood. She
had written "Danny take my virgin" on a big piece of paper. Danny Wood was
very flattered by the request and brought the girl up on stage. He paraded
around the stage with the girl. It was allover the papers and teenmagazines
in Sweden.

Another embarrassing thing happened to Donnie Wahlberg at the concert - he
requested that all the girls in the audience should take their tops and be
topless. Considering the average age at the concert was 12, it was a rather
sick request. The audience started booeing, not quite the reaction he
wanted.

Those were embarrassing moments for everyone at that concert.

>Embarrassing Celeb Encounter

Years ago, I was standing in a bank line, awaiting the next available teller,
when DANNY GLOVER came into the bank. He was on crutches and had a plaster
cast on his leg, from his foot up to his thigh.

He entered the queue line, one of those S-shaped "mazes" with the metal poles
and braided ropes strung between the poles that create the channel you follow
to the front of the teller line.

Well, Danny decided to take a shortcut and "hop" over several of the ropes to
reach the end of the line, rather than follow the lane back and forth --
attempting this manuever with the cast on his leg and while holding a pair of
crutches!

He got his leg-with-cast up and *almost* over the low-slung rope, then got it
tangled in the rope, then he lost his balance. His heavy leg cast pulled down
the rope, which caused the metal poles at either end to tip over with loud
CLANGS, which started a chain reaction, pulling down additional connected ropes
and adjacent poles.

Meanwhile, Danny still has both crutches clutched in one hand and is
frantically hopping around on his good foot, trying to regain his balance, but
his leg-in-cast is still tangled in the rope and it looks like Danny is going
to go down. He throws down his crutches (more clatter) and attempts to grab at
anything to keep from falling. All of this is accompanied by continuous
CLANGS! as the other poles and ropes continue to be pulled down.

Several of us in the line reacted, grabbing at a flailing Danny, caught him,
and got him untangled. Then we got him standing firmly again and retrieved his
crutches for him, with him thanking us profusely. The din created by the
falling poles and thrown crutches sounded like a car had crashed through the
bank's front doors: all the tellers looked terrified, and the startled security
guard actually had grabbed his gun from its holster! It was complete
pandemonium until everyone realized what had happened and calm was finally
restored.

We were all embarrassed, but Danny was the most embarrassed of all. I think I
recall reading that he had broken his leg while skiing. Well, he almost had a
matching pair after his visit to that bank!

A few years I went to a Comic Con. There were a number of celebrities from
the sixties & seventies signing autographs at the convention. I noticed
that Julie Newmar was there, and I was eager to let her know how much I had
enjoyed her performances over the years. IMHO she was one of the most
beautiful and underappreciated comic actresses of the era, and intelligent
to boot.

When I saw her I was dumbstruck, mostly because she had had so much plastic
surgery that she was beginning to resemble Michael Jackson. I could only
gawk, which she noticed, embarrassing both me and her.

I was too drunk and too stupid to have been embarrassed. It's better to
embarrass them first. In my salad days, I screamed "Petticoooooat
Junction" at Meredith MacRae, "Greeeeeeen Acres!" at Eddie Albert, made
Robby Benson blush and Jessica Harper leave a bookstore. I told Susan
Dey she was stupid and stopped David Warner in his tracks. I made Exene
Cervenka glare at me, helped drive Barbra Streisand out of a gift shop,
and terrorized Lisa Gerritsen (Cloris Leachman's daughter on MTM show
and "Phyllis") in an airport. I'm just misunderstood, that's all.

Where on god's green earth are those "militant gay factions" who engage in

They're all smaller than I expect, except for Beverly Sills, who is
practically a giantess. (5'11'' is my guess). One time I spoke a few
words to her when she was waiting for her car at 62nd and Columbus just
outside the State Theater stage door, and she was wearing high-heeled
boots, a big hat, and a fully-let out sable coat that must have set her
back a cool $75,000. I felt like a dwarf.

Ah yes, the Homosexual Jihad. I've heard rumours about them before. No
wonder they went for a gun nut like Tom Selleck. No doubt his crap

Back in the day before y'all had them VCRs and BVDs, or whatever they're
called, we used to have to go out of our houses to see non-mainstream
films. At a John Waters festival, Susan sat prominently in the lobby of
the Nuart after a showing of PINK FLAMINGOES going on about how that was
the worst, most disturbing movie she had ever seen, or somesuch shit. I
think she was auditioning for all us other moviegoers, or something. She
sure wasn't leaving; she was stickin' around for the next Waters film.
She was post-Brady and pre-L.A. Law and looked like hell. I stood near
her and interrupted her performance by talking about her stupidity to my
nearby friends. Or something. I was probably wasted.

Adrienne Barbeau was in the original stage production of Fiddler on the
Roof. She is on the original cast album. She played one of the daughters.
So it's really not such a stretch.

I was pretty sure about this, but not being able to find my album (my
vinyl broadway show albums are in a box somewhere temporarily), I double
checked on the internet movie database and they said that she was
nominated for a tony for her portrayal of Rizzo in the original cast of
Grease. (They also said she made her debut in Fiddler.)

Anyway, she is goingback to her roots. She should be a step above Pia
Zadora at least.

Adrienne played one of the older three daughters (as did Bette Midler)when
the show was in its original run on Broadway. She was not in the original
cast (Julia Migenes [now Migenes-Johnson of opera fame] WAS one of the
original three, though.

Wasn't there a fur coat advertisement that said something like "What becomes a

I think it was Blackgama or something like that.

I know that Beverly Sills did the ad. Maybe she got to keep the coat . .

Actually, this was sable. According to her autobio, her husband bought the coat
for her as a gift, and he (retired publisher Peter Greenough) is very
extravagant. "If you send Peter out for a bagel, he comes home with the entire
stock of Zabar's" Sills once said.

And, yes, Sills did do a Blackglama ad, in which she looks like a very happy and
nice nouveau riche New York Jewish lady.

I have heard that Sills was really
one of the easier divas to work
with--genuinely nice, warm person.
I've never been a huge fan of her voice,
but I really admire her perseverance--
she was not one of those divas who got
all the lucky breaks.

I have known Beverly for many years because she and my sister are good friends
and both have daughters the same age.

Beverly's daughter, Muffy, is deaf, and her other child had a birth defect and
has been institutionalized since birth.

Quite an irony that one of the world's great voices could never be heard by her
own children.

I've heard about that. It is such a weird
irony. Isn't there some story about using
her daughter as a super and her telling
people get out of the way so she could
see her kid? It's cute.

Sills herself doesn't take very much to the "irony" angle; she says that having
a disabled child is pretty much the same to any mother.

Muffy was supering in LUCIA, as a candlebearer during Sills's funeral scene (she
was dead at the time.) Sills says she hissed, "Move your ass, I can't see my
kid." When this story was repeated, Beverly's mother Mrs. Silverman announced,
"My baby doesn't use that kind of language!"

I believe it--it's one of those things that
makes Sills sound so genuine and
balanced.

Ha! Mrs. Silverman clearly didn't
spend much time on stage. Opera's
just an excuse to swear in four
different languages.

I did see Michael T. Weiss from "The Pretender" series.

I think he's a bottom bodybuilder.

He sure is. (And I know exactly who he bottoms for, too!)
