Unfortunately NBC picked up SCTV only to bury it in the AM hours so as to ensure the survival of its pathetic SNL. SNL didn't, and still doesn't, hold a candle to SCTV.

Yes, SCTV, was most definitely the best comedy show of all time.

Being a fan of Figure skating, SCTV has pretty well ruined things for me since the ex-USSR member countries started competing independently. Whenever there is a skater from Uzbekistan I start laughing hysterically. I wish some Uzbekistanian skater would wear a fur loincloth and skate around a fire while chewing on a big bone.
Everything about SCTV was fantastic. It rarely was a letdown. In fact I can hardly remember any comedy bits on SCTV that flopped. I think their secret was it was character based comedy. They just had tremendous characters on those shows. I've hated NBC ever since the time when they purposely, and maliciously, shitcanned SCTV in order to protect their relatively banal SNL.
Even at its BEST, SNL was never as funny as SCTV on a typical night.

Don't forget Count Floyd trying to make The Odd Couple seem like a horror flick.

I have to wholeheartedly agree. No other comedy show including SNL or Mad-TV has even come close to the truly well crafted comedy sketches on SCTV.
Some of my all time favorites:
The SCTV Movies of the week: "The Nobel" which was a take off on "The Oscar" The opening of "The Godfather" in which Mayberry barber Floyd Lawson begs Guy Caballero to kill Opie. "Maudlin's Eleven" which featured a "heist" of Danny Thomas' Dressing room circa 1959. Johnny Puleo and the Harmonicats gets mowed down by Bobby Bitman.

Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. They did cut the running time. I wonder how much input Lorne Michaels had in destroying SCTV. In the early 80s when SNL was totally pathetic (actually it still is) they should have cancelled it and replaced that moribund show with SCTV. Instead NBC picked up SCTV only to DESTROY it so as not to have competing with its crappy SNL.

MAD-TV seems like a copy of SNL. Both shows have the same feel to them. Nothing really innovative about MAD-TV.

Oh yeah! Bobby Bittman. Another great character. The point is that SCTV was fairly bursting with fantasitic characters. Hey, remember that detective that Eugene Levy used to portray? Another great character. I also loved the way they spoofed the overproduced TV Christmas specials. Whenever I see a Kathie Lee Christmas Special I always think of the SCTV Christmas specials.
I just loved EVERYTHING about SCTV. There was virtually no lull in the entertainment.
Hey, remember the Soviet Minicam from C3P1 Soviet TV? The minicam looked like it weighed about a ton.
Yeah, one of the GREAT TRAGEDIES of comedy was that sickening thing NBC did to destroy SCTV only to save a CRAP show like SNL.

I agree with PJ about SCTV as well, which doesn't scare me at all. It was one of those shows whose brilliance is obvious even to the otherwise dull-witted. ;)
- Elayne (does a mean Perini Sclerosa impression... "siiiDOWN...")
Actually Second City was the first title of the series from Canada. The series was a half hour show that usually played after the SNL that featured Robin Duke and Tony Rosano. And Second was much funnier inthe half hour episodes. NBC bought eh series but changed title to SCTV to avoid any legal hassles from Chicago's Second City and the series was terrible. How far can you stretch a pathetic minute or two sketch?? Watch reruns of the 90 minute format and find out. Wasn't SCTV bumped to make room for Friday Night videos?

HOOOORAY!!!! Finally an intelligent statement from Elayne. OK, because of this AND because you cut my phone bill down with that 1016868 bit, I will refrain from flaming you TWICE when you otherwise would richly deserve it.

And on an apparently a lower budget too. This was the best for my money. I still remember bits and laugh which is something I don't do for SNL even when I see the reruns on Comedy Central.

Even the "Golden Years" of SNL were never as good as SCTV. One thing I hate is that SNL is so star driven where the real life stars overwhelm the characters they play. On SCTV, it was different. The characters were all important and the personalities of the stars took second stage.

YES! That's it!
Also, love Count Floyd as the dad on Freaks & Geeks!

-- Farm Film Celebrity Blow Up, featuring interesting young actress with offbeat good looks Meryl Streep (also an offbeat young actress with interesting good looks); and Brooke "Whip It" Shields. Catherine O'Hara did both. -- "Peter Pan" starring Divine (John Candy). -- Perini Scleroso -- The 3-D House of Cats -- Lorna Minelli getting wasted on a talk show (Sammy Maudlin?) while they keep re-running a clip of a fly flying into her mouth while she's singing -- The Bob and Doug McKenzie TV special with special guests Joyce DeWitt, Morgan Fairchild, and (the real) Tony Bennett -- Lola Heatherton!!! On her special, she sings a duet with Mother Teresa (I think). "I want to bear your children!" Catherine O'Hara also did a great Rusty Warren-like character, which I only saw a couple of times. -- God love me, I even got a kick out of all the shows being advertised to appear on Thursday at Nine.

I also like when Bobby Bittman did an overly sentimental song for the troops fighting in the Falkland Islands. He mispronounced "Falkland" as "Fackland" and he sang it like a Calyso song as if it was in the Caribbean. Also loved all those gaudy rings and showbiz jewelry Bobby Bittman wore.

How about the time when Lola Heatherton was interviewing Mother Theresa (Andrea Martin) and saying "But Mummy Theresa, what's in it for you? Don't you sometimes just want to say 'Oh COME ON PEOPLE, GET IT TOGETHER!' ?"
LOL!
Also, whenever Andrea did a bit on Joyce DeWitt, it was always Joyce De1/2 Witt.
Five or more times I've watched some sketches. Still kills me!
"Kids in the Hall"! - never seen drag done better -- or funnier!
KITH took me a season or two to catch on, but then --
Anyone see the movie: "Cannibal Girls From ----"? Andrea Martin and other SCTV.
Some SO VERY simple scenes that only Canadians (Brits maybe?) can pull off: Pulling into the parking-lot of a one-story whacked-out Motel in mid-north bleak Ontario, Andrea chirps from the car, "Was it always this beautiful?"
With such bewildered honesty I still crack up.
Chevy Chase's "Vacation" pix were clumsy-funny. SCTV put a whole new edge on "in your face" humour. Way cooler!
If you haven't experienced SCTV go to your vid store. Do two or three to get the drift; report back!
Andrea Martin still does commercials. Some theatre.
Holy shit, A.M. as wotsername as the dopey maid in "One Day at a Time" soap opera...as "Edith Prickley" station manager. As Edna of Edna and Bill's (?) Organ Emporium, with Parking-Lot Specials!
