I hear that Johnny Carson has an African American granddaughter
fathered by his son and that he refuses to acknowledge the child or
have anything to do with her. Whats the story here, anyone know?

No idea, never heard it.

I will point out though, that not acknowledging an out-of-wedlock grandchild
who is black is not necessarily racist.

I recall this story from several years ago - the child and her mother
appeared on a talk show (Sally Jesse Rafael?) and I believe the topic was
biracial children who had been rejected by family members due to the color
of their skin. I seem to recall that race was in fact an issue with Carson.

Right, he might not be racist which is why I used the ? in the heading.
Just wanted to get some opinions here. I remember reading
the article in I think it was People magazine a few years ago about
his grandchild and that he refused to talk to her or communicate in
any way.

IIRC, this woman and child live/lived in South Florida. I can't remember which
Carson son is the father - is it the one who was killed in the auto accident?

I've worked with Johnny's son and his brother, director Dick Carson and all
I can say is that they are not a close, warm, fuzzy family regardless of
what color one of the children's wives may be.

FWIW, I have spent almost 40 years as a manger/agent for blues artists and was
backstage at the "Tonight" show often enough to know that Johnny Carson has a
deep personal friendship for a number of black artists.

When his hosting days were dwindling down to a precious few and agents were
fighting to get their clients on the show, Carson personally made sure that
B.B. King and Joe Williams had prime spots.

This is not to say that he might not have rejected a bi-racial grandchild but
he was never racist in his professional life.

I didn't think Carson was known for deep, personal friendships with many
performers at all. Most of his favourite guests were people he didn't talk
to outside of their time on the couch.

It was around 1989 in Fort Lauderdale. I think the son was
Chris. I was living there at the time. The tabloids
had a field day with it. Of course in 1989 Diana was alive
and so was Jackie and MJ was being accused so the
rags had a lot more in their feeding bag than they do
now so the story was never that big.

Does anyone know if the child's parents were ever married? I think that may
have been a part of it as well.

In article <73du1t$ajv$1...@camel25.mindspring.com>, "Anastasia's Music Web"

<musi...@nospam.mindspring.com> quotes Gary Smith 'n sez:

> >I've worked with Johnny's son and his brother, director Dick Carson

...is Dick still bent outta shape about how Johnny treated Dick's leaving
the Tonight Show control room? My understanding was that Dick came in to
say that he was thinking of leaving, and Johnny's cold reaction was to ask
if Dick thought NBC could get another particular director as a
replacement...also, would a behind-the-scenes rivalry between Johnny and
Merv Griffin be a primary reason Dick spent so many years working Merv's
shows?...

...as I recall, they weren't, and this particular son had gone against
Johnny's wishes and struck out on his own to be a golf pro in Florida (and
a downright lousy one at that)...

Your use of a question mark does nothing. You have implied something that is
probably not true. Why do that? Why not put something in the subject heading
like "Johnny Carson refuses to acknowledge illegitimate child?" You get to the
point more and you don't necessarily imply something such as you have done.

Yes I think an exclamation point would have made a bolder statement.
