^Yes, Yes, I read this too!, laughed and cried. In my generation the
outcome, I'm sure, would have been different. Although written for the
awakening teenage lesbian, it is a good read at any age.

Not sure if this is a genuine post, but here goes anyway....
Still Life with Woodpecker - Tom Robbins.
I love Tom Robbins' books and this one is just as good as all the others.
He's the funniest writer I've read in the longest time and I constantly
reccommend him to friends etc.
Les enfants terribles - Jean Cocteau. I admit to reading this in translation,
despite having a degree in French (shame on me). I found the power and
enormity of the relationships dealt with shocking and quite frightening.
Possessing the secret of Joy - Alice Walker. This book made me feel ill whilst
travelling to work on the Tube. Which isn't to say I didn't like the book. I found
the subject shocking and horrific (not exactly surprising, from a white, european
background) but thought it was incredibly well handled and written with a lot of
courage.
Anyone else have any views on any of these, or any others?

in the space of 48 hours, three people recommended that i read
still life with a woodpecker this summer. so seeing that the
gods had it in me, i read every tom robbins book i could get
a hold of. in two weeks while traveling to and away from
michigan. i don't get to read much of anything for fun anymore
so it was actually very odd to sit down with a book and read
it for pleasure. i started analyzing at once (and he's a good
read for analyzation) but i think i was put off by my own need
to delve. i liked still life, and jitterbug perfume (it had
the most plot), but i would have to say all in all, that
after awhile his style is a bit slow. EVEN THOUGH, he's from
seattle and writes about it which is of course, a cool thing.
oops. i meant that after awhile it became pedantic.
but maybe that's because i read all of his books in a week.
that'll do it.

Ditto. I was so excited when they said they were making a movie
of the book. If you haven't read it, give it a try. It was great when I
20 years ago but I'm not sure how it would be if I picked it up for the
first time now. But the movie sucked - big time. Not even Uma made a
difference. I don't think I lasted through the whole movie. Thank
goodness I rented it. I did see "Go Fish" not too long ago - and I was
surprisingly impressed. I don't know why but I didn't think I would like it
that much.
Don't know what this thread is about but - I saw Denise Uyehara a couple
of weeks ago. She did a one woman peformance called "Hello (Sex) Kitty:
Mad Asian &@!# On Wheels" in which she describes herself as an Asian
Lesbian Stand-up Comedian - except that she is Japanese American, bisexual
and a performance artist. Anyway, go see her if you get a chance. She was
really fun as well as thought-provoking (well, I guess that's what performance
artists do). And if you can, take a really straight looking, open-minded
female friend and make sure they sit on the aisle. Or if you're brave enough,
you sit on the aisle.
And, BTW, she has a really nice butt.
Ok, nuff, I'm off to see "Stomp" with a friend. Not sure what to expect.
All's I know is that it's kinda dance and kinda percussion and I think
they jump around and hit on trash cans.

THEY'RE AWESOME! i cannot stress that enough. stomp was really
cool. i'm glad i saw it. and they're on a commercial now, too.

I think, Deanna, that they were INCREDIBLE. I am so glad I got to see them.
They did five performances here and they were all sold out well in advance.
I could have easily watch that performance several times. What I really
liked was how interactive they were with the audience - and it was all non-
verbal.
