To all Amazon Warriors ~

Think about this....there are 3 alt lesbian groups that have been overrun
by spam and all the lesbians have been driven off. *sigh*
alt.shoe.lesbians
alt.pootergeek.lesbian
alt.lesbian.feminist.poetry

Seems as though just having "lesbian" in the title invites ads for porn
oriented towards STRAIGHT MALES!!! How is that?
As you can see.....none of these titles suggest anything about being an
"erotica" site for lesbians ~

Yes, there are lesbians who enjoy erotica and porn......however there are
other alt groups oriented towards this. Why is EVERY alt site with lesbian
in the title subjected to such a barrage??? Who would think that any group
interested in poetry would be necessarily inclined to be interested in
porn? <especially idiotic are the posts for sites that cater to "hot
lesbian sex with straight males" posted to the *feminist*
group.......*LMAO* yeah....that's your target audience, isn't it?>

I understand that we *do* have the option of developing a moderated group.
And there is now alt.shoe.lesbians.moderated >> but why should we HAVE
TO????? Apparently we don't have the same freedom of association as other
groups.

I also understand that alt groups by nature incur spam. I am subscribed to
a number of alt groups and I don't see the same thing happening in those
groups......why just the lesbian groups?
alt.astrology has an occassional get rich quick spam.....or maybe an
occassional sex site spam......but not 60 sex site spams per day, every
day.........(there are noticably few get rich spams in the lesbian groups)

I am not writing this just to whine and complain. The LBGT community has
fought long and hard for the few freedoms we now enjoy. The LBGT community
is a diverse group with a number of lawyers, computer specialists, internet
savvy folks, and veterans of many successful battles. Let's use some of
that experience to come up with a solution to take back what "turf" we have
already fought long and hard to obtain. If we concede to being run off,
we are handing straight society the knife with which to stab us more........

So ~ I am looking for practical ideas regarding how to take back these
groups. What recourses and resources do we have at our disposal to
retaliate?? What do other groups do differently that they are not
similarly innundated??

The only idea that I have come up with so far is using "sappho" in the
title and creating a new newsgroup. But this defeats the purpose. We
should be entitled to use "lesbian" in peace and not be run off......
(Note ~ using the handle Sappho in the Channel 1 Chathouse, I have often
been asked by straight people....are you m/f??? *L* So the sappho idea may
work.....at least for a while.......)

Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions.

Hi another lesbian group I belong to.....uicu.org.lesbians has also been
overrun with porno crap. I don't know about your groups but ours is being
over run by xxxsexjunkie and we have really been trying to fight them off :(
I did alot of reading on the net about spam and there is a newsgroup I now
belong to (and I recommend anyone who hates spam to join)called
news.admin.net-abuse.misc that helps with spam. I posted and asked for help
and several folks gave suggestions of who to call(calling is more effective
than emailing) and I did get positive responses from the different ISP I
called. BUT it hasn't solved everything and we are STILL getting spammed. :(
The other suggestion I got from most of the admins was to make a moderated
list which we really dont want to do. :( and the other thing our group has
been doing is using a program called SpamHater(you can dl it off the web) we
have been sending complaint letters to all the ISPs that the spam went
through. It seems to help but only for a bit, I think they websites just
change names and go to a new provider and start over again.....big
sigh.......Well I hope this provides some info and help.

i recommend the net-abuse group, too .... we used it a lot when we
were spam fighting in asl. (and i think i was one of the people who
responded to indi when she asked for help)

unfortunately, the only effective way to deal with the spam is to go
moderated. we tried fighting the stuff in asl and, even though we had
some very good spam fighters in the newsgroup, we just couldn't keep
up. and we wound up spending all our time fighting spammers instead
of talking to each other.

i'd suggest thinking about it this way: does aslm look good to you?
or swlab? both groups are the way they are--spam free--because they
are moderated ....

In the words of a dear departed princess, popularity has its
shortcomings.

Pardon the intrusion long enough for an apologetic male to ask an
intelligent question: Can anyone shed light on "Ring Code" for me?

I work among many women, a few of whom have index rings, thumb rings,
toe rings. My male intuition <ouch!> tells me I've come to the right
place for answers.

if i may butt in... popularity has nothing to do with it. suggesting that
lewd attentions have to do with popularity is insulting. spam is
automatically targetted at any newsgroup with a key word in it that refers
to sex---spammers deduce that all reading the newsgroup are there for sex,
and so they send out their muck. the reality is that lesbians are seen by
the world-at-large as sexual creatures, not women who love women. "lesbian"
therefore means "getcher sex here," as well as just about any other
identifier we could imagine for our tribe. the only way to stop it is to
fence them out completely: with moderators.

Thank you, Cristi, for your eloquent response... and we're pretty fond of
your shoes, too (if I may be so bold as to speak for the rest of the mods).

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I buy rings because I like how
they look, then I wear them on whatever finger they fit best. This ends up
varying depending on the temperature, what I'm doing, and whether I'm
wearing them over gloves or not (oops, that one only counts in the 15th
century). My friends who are _really_ into rings tend to wear one or more
on each finger, so I don't know how much you could read into it.

If there's a "code" no one gave me the secret decoder ring. (Or told me on
which finger to wear it!)

We hear a faint squeaking sound in the middle distance. The sound of an
clattery but non-the-less-powerful air-cooled engine roars unsteadily
above the shrill protestations of the front offside wheel bearing.

Could it be??? Yes it is!!!! It's

Rah tat ta rah ta ta taaaaa~~~~~~~~~

Emergency Lesbian(tm)!!!!

As the Superheroinemobile(tm) draws to a halt, we glimpse the huddled
figure of Penguin Gal(tm). She looks sweet and content, wrapped in a
blanket, curled up and fast asleep on the rear seat of the gleaming
white VW camper van.

Emergency Lesbian(tm) shuffles accross the passenger seat and opens the
passenger door, yet again making a mental note to get the lock on the
driver's door fixed.

Unfortunately, EL(tm) is concentrating so hard on not giving herself
plastic thigh burns and berating herself for her forgetfulness that she
fails to notice that the lower right suspender belt thong has caught on
the gear lever.

Emergency Lesbian(tm) opens the passenger door and her costume is
revealed to all. Her leather basque only just contains her ample
breasts. Her muscular shoulders hunch only slightly as the tension in
her suspender belt overcomes the attractions of the grear lever, and the
back laced-edged elastic snaps into her smooth thigh with a resounding

>smack<

Andy, who has been sitting still waiting patiently for an answer to his
innocent question looks up at the sound.

EL(tm) strolls over to Andy, and with her right forefinger, gently shuts
his mouth.

She sits down beside him, and says

Well, Andy, it's like this.

Andy, I'm up here...

It's like this

First you have to know that there are three basic lesbian rings. There's
the pinkie ring, the thumb ring and the middle finger ring.

This is how you tell what they mean:

1. The thumb ring is worn only by women who consider themselves butch
but have, in fact, a large femme component to their personalities. If
they were Really Butch, they wouldn't consider wearing any sort of
persoanl adornment. You shouldn't, however, confuse the Really Butch
woman with a Stone Butch woman. They, of course, are stone masonettes.
Please note also that there are lots of butch straight women. And
straight butch women, but neither are interchangable. Unless it's a full
moon.

2. The pinkie ring is worn only by lesbians of a certain age, usually
those who smile smugly when they have a puff of their meirscham pipe and
say

"you've never been hurt 'till you've been hurt by a woman"

They generally participate in groups called "Growing Older
Disgracefully" and are currently developing A Tantric Sex Programme for
Lesbians with Arthritis.

3. The wedding ring finger ring is worn either by lesbians who are now
celebrating their celebacy, and wish to have symbolic - ummm - symbol
of their new-found relationship with themselves. They usually only wear
this ring for a few days before they give it to their next lover on
their second date to wear on her wedding ring finger as a symbol of
their new and never-dying love.

Well, that's all pretty straight forward, isn't it? Well, nothing in
life is simple. Now we come to the real art of the interpretation of
lesbians and their strange and mysterious ways of communicating. Ready?
Here we go:

If a lesbain wears a wedding ring finger ring on her wedding ring
finger, she's either celebate or married - to either a man or a woman,
or perhaps both, unless of course she is wearing also a pinky ring, in
which case, she is:

a) marrried to a woman of her own (advanced) age;

b) marrried to an ideal that involves lots of flowers, burning inscence
and dancing nekkid with lots of other pinky ring and wedding ring finger
ring wearing women, or

c) hasn't had sex in so long that she can't remember how and has decided
that declaring celebacy is the best way to avoid those embarassing
moments when the mind reels in rebelion, and the mouth can only just be
disuaded from shouting out "You want me to WHAT with that
cucumber???!!!!"

If she is wearing a pink ring, a wedding finger ring and a thumb ring,
then you may be one of the few, the VERY few, who has the courage what
that means.

Andy looks down at Emergency Lesbian(tm)'s hands. They are beautifully
manicured, with each nail carefully cut short with each edge smooth and
cool. She wears a ring on her thumb, her wedding ring finger, and her
pinky.

Andy swallows uncomfortably as Emergency Lesbian(tm) shows him her other
hand. She demonstrates graphically that she is also wearing a ring on
her middle finger.
