Kay and Kattibrie were in the dining hall for dinner when the news came,
<The hatchling is born, my Kay.>
Kay stiffened, <And..>
<The girls say she is perfect.>
<Perfect?> Kay asked .. he had to know for certain.
<Perfect.>
Kay felt a tap on hi shoulder and turned to see Kattibrie looking at him
questioningly.
<Tahlaya's baby is born.>
Kattibrie smiled, "We shall have to pay our respects. Probably in the
morning, when she's rested."
Kay nodded, but his mind was elsewhere. Sabbith said the baby was perfect.
Relief flooded through him. But maybe he should make sure they checked ..
even double checked. He looked at Kattibrie, *I have to go ..*
She looked at him, "Where?"
Kay froze, he couldn't tell her .. not when she didn't even know .. *I ..
I'll tell you later.* he stood and signed, *I love you.* Then he gave her
a quick kiss on the cheek and ran out of the dining hall.
<Calishandra wants to know what's wrong. Her rider is worried.>
<I couldn't tell her, Sabbith.>
<Why not?>
<Because ..>
<I think you're being silly. What do you want me to tell her dragon.
Remember she's a queen. I won't lie to her.>
<And you think I'm silly! Just tell her I'm fine and that I'll see her
later. I'll make it up to her later.>
Sabbith perked up, <More kisses?>
Kay grinned, <I hope so.>
He met his dragon on the green and they flew the rest of the distance to
the medical center. He quickly found Sarrine and pulled out his slate.
[Tahlaya?]
"She's fine." Sarrine smiled.
[The baby?]
"A beautiful girl."
[Does she have good ears?]
"Good ears?" Sarrine asked looking at him in confustion.
He pointed to his own ears and tapped the slate again. Sarrine nodded and
smiled gently at the dark young man in front of her. "She has perfect ears.
Let me see if Laya will see you."
He went to shake his head and she grinned, "I think she'll want to see you.
Please wait."
He nodded and watched her go, wondering if he really wanted to see Laya yet
or not. He had almost decided not and turned to leave when Sarrine came out
and motioned him in. "Only for a short time."
He nodded and walked in. Laya was there with Ash, they both looked up with
tired smiles at him. Kay waved to them as his eyes fell on the tiny infant.
*She's beautiful,* he signed.
Laya grinned and nodded, "And she's perfect, Kay."
*She has grey eyes, Kay. Just like her father.* Laya signed to him with one
hand.
He looked at her for a moment then at Ash who stared back at him with grey
eyes. Kay's grin widened, *Like Ash ..*
Laya nodded. Kay relaxed visibly and moved a little closer to admire Laya
and Ash's child.

Later that night, Kattibrie found Kay in his apartment, working by
candlelight on a pastel portrait. He didn't notice her until she moved
around him, pulling up a chair to sit down. He looked at her and smiled,
*Hi.*
"Sabbith said it was okay to come on up."
Kay nodded and smiled at her. She turned her attention to the portrait of a
tiny dark haired infant sleeping peacefully in a billowing white and grey
back ground.
"Laya's baby?" She asked him.
Kay nodded, then he frowned. *I went to see her tonight.*
"Why?" she asked.
He bowed his head slightly before beginning to tell her the whole story of
the question of Solara's paternity. She watched his story quietly and Kay
worried about what she might be thinking, *I only found out the other day
.. there was something wrong with her pregnancy, making it go much faster.
I just had to know if there was anything wrong ..* He frowned, *I wouldn't
want any child cursed with being deaf ..*

NRPG: Lea, I'll wait to get to the baby's death until my next post. But the
picture will be finished :) hope you don't mind Kay visiting at night, but
I figured he wouldn't be able to wait until he knew for 100% sure :)
