Secondly, what paint should I use? I've done it before at school, but I
haven't a clue what materials were used. I want an abstract type design,
does anyone have any tips or know any good websites for this sort of thing?
Thank you!

Take a look at my Fabric List for their number and give them a buzz
tomorrow.
As for paint, and fair to middling craft/art/fabric shop will have
them. The little pots are quite expensive, but will do for more than
one scarf. You could do a whole lot of them, all different, for
friends/sisters/mum/aunts...

I've played with SetaColor. It is a paint/dye that does not affect the
"hand" of the fabric much. It also has photo resist qualities to it. You
paint it on, then put thing on top (like netting, leaves or nuts, bolts and
washers) and it takes on the pattern. It is sold in the larger fabric store
I go to, and I noticed in one website there is a silk version:
https://www.prochemical.com/setasilk.htm
By the way, we get our fancy fabrics from the remnant box. My son and
daughter enjoy rummaging about to find the best bits (closely supervised,
since the boy enjoys going in head first with his feet in the air) - and
though I haven't bought any, they have pulled up silk (we usually purchase
lengths of stretch velvet for little girl shirts).
