...goes unpunished.

Last fall, I donated two of my frabulous fleece capes to my
high school reunion scholarship committee. I ordered the
Walden Mills fleece, got buttons and thread and was set.
One winner was thrilled, picked hers up and wrote me a very
nice thank you letter. The other decided she didn't really
want a cape, but well, OK, she guessed she could give it to
her 90-year-old aunt for Christmas. She didn't want me to
bother her frail elderly aunt, *she* would take
measurements, etc... you know where this is headed. Off a
cliff! The measurements seemed wonky, so I double checked
with her twice before cutting the fleece. Made it up,
including embroidering the Aunt's name on the collar, and
delivered it last winter.

Well, come January... the aunt had a stroke, "Would [I]
take the cape back?" Um no, says I, keep it, you can use it
for yourself or donate it. Comes February, another call,
the aunt is better, but she's lost 50 pounds, "Could [I]
alter the cape?" Sigh. Sure, but this time I'LL TAKE
MEASURMENTS. So, Tuesday I drove out to the aunt's nursing
home. Auntie wants it *much* shorter front and sides, not a
problem. But now "customer" wants it altered into a coat.
No, sorry, it's a cape, you had a picture of what I donated
*and* my sister was wearing hers at the reunion dinner. So
settled, I would take 5" off the front and sides, and a
little off the back, re-hem it and call it good.

As I'm leaving, customers says, "Oh by the way, since you
sew, and Auntie has lost so much weight, would you also
alter these (four or five pairs by the look of it) pants?"

"I'm so sorry, I *never* do alterations except on garments I
have made myself," says I.

Done and out the damned door.

She wasn't actually a paying "customer", so it was
difficult. I wanted to be sure the reunion committee
received its bid money.

As my father-in-law always said, "[I] have learned a
valuable lesson."

Those kinds tend to be the most demanding. Someone who pays you a fair
price for your work (and expertise) is more likely to value that work.
Someone who gets something for free wants everything for the same cost.

Much sympathy, isn't it always the way that some one who, isn't paying
makes the most noise. i bet she never had anything hand made to measure
before. Sill your brownie points are surely on your scoreboard Beverly.
If she calls again, you have already done more than you volunteered to

This wasn't a case of her not paying, it was just that she
wasn't paying *me*. She probably felt she had overbid (but
really hadn't) and was having buyer's remorse. She probably
won't call again, but if she tries she's going to find my
number oddly "unreachable". ;->

Lesson learned when I was trapped by my then-new
step-mother. Trying to facilitate friendly feelings, I said
yes when she asked if I could to a couple of alterations.
When I arrived for the fitting, she had over a dozen
garments she wanted altered. I vowed then, never again.

I'm happy to do alterations for short-daughter and
scoliosis-afflicted-daughter, but no one else. Ever.

I just tell the person they can get the alteration done a lot faster, and a
lot less expensive at the local dry cleaners and it would be cheaper to just
go ahead and buy new pants. And besides, it will be a couple months before
I am caught up to take on anymore sewing.

Human nature. The harder we have to work for something, the more value
we put on it. When something comes easily, falls in our laps, we tend
to discount it. I think maybe that's why rich kids are often spoiled,
they don't have to work for things, so they think they deserve whatever
they want. Poor kids, on the other hand, will fight over a pair of shoes.

What?? No pockets? What about sleeves? A zipper? It has a collar,
IIRC, but maybe a hood would be nice? And while you're at it, make some
in these three colors, and I'll call you when I'm ready to pick them up.

To be honest, I wouldn't waste a single malt on or any whiskey on fleece.
Since most polar fleece is made in China, why not go for some Chinese baijiu
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baijiu ). I should think that any type here
should work excellently as a painkiller since they are all about 40-60% ABV.

Thank you, Kate. I'll be sure to put that on my shopping list. I'll
pick it up after I collect my new Bentley.

Amazing that somewhere, there are people who actually do buy such
things, and probably don't think much about it. After all, it's only
money. *snort*

At the moment, I'm feeling very luxurious and spendthrift having bought
my birthday present (a month early, but what the heck.) In our family,
I do this, then tell DH what he got me, and thank him for his
thoughtfulness. At any rate, I got a Keurig Vue single-serve beverage
maker, and am having lots of fun with it. DH is in Frankfurt at the
moment -- or is that tomorrow and he's still in Prague? He'll be home
Sunday now that there's no ATC strike. The funny part of it is that
every night, I think to myself that it's time to clean the coffee pot
and get it set up for morning. Then I realize, no, I don't!

Ah... Pod machine. No, ta. I like to choose my coffee the way I
choose my whisky. I buy beans and freeze them, and we grind them fresh
for every pot. Every few months I put in an order with Whittards, and I
need to get together with a friend and bulk buy some of the special
single estate coffees he gets from his supplier. If we bulk buy (4
kilos or more of coffee in total, though you can have 3 or 4 different
ones in the order), you get a reasonable deal, rather like getting a
case price on wine. We get through 2 or 3 six mug jugfuls between three
of us most days.

I'm still looking for a replacement filter coffee machine as the one we
were using went PHUT and puffed blue smoke at me the day after I got
back after being away for a weekend! Luckily this is not too urgent as
I have an old spare one...

Right now I am feeling extravagant after putting a deposit down with the
upholsterer to get my sofa and four chairs recovered. My hands will no
longer do upholstery proper, though re-covering the dining chairs
shouldn't be too hard... And after having to replace the dishwasher and
lawnmower when both died the weekend I was away!

Keurig sell a filter that allows you to use your own beans. That
said, the big reason[1] peole like the machines is because they're always
clean. All the parts that touch coffee are replaced every time. If
you're willing to clean properly and regularly, you can et better
results from a normal machine.

[1] the second reason is that the cups contain the right amount of
coffee; but that's also possible to get right without them doing it
for you.

Yes, although with the new Vue, it wasn't Keurig who sold the reuseable
cup, but I did get one. I've been buying coffee from Peet's, who roast
and ship the same day, and I've been getting it the next day. I don't
freeze the beans, though. Now that the patent has expired on K-cups,
Peet's is offering them. LOL! Not the Vue cups, though. My "old"
coffeemaker grinds the beans and makes the coffee. I'll be doing my own
grinding now. But the pre-filled cups are great for my husband, who
refuses to learn how to use technology, especially since he can get
someone else to do for him.

Like so many people I know, we have an assortment of mugs of various
sizes and configurations. Most with significant mottoes or pictures on
them. It's been fun with the Keurig, which allows me to select the
amount of coffee, from 6oz. to 18 oz. with a default setting of 8 oz.
All of our mugs will hold 8 oz., but some will hold more, but once the
button is pushed, that's what you get. I almost overloaded a mug with
10 oz., underfilled another with 10. I have decided to mark the bottoms
of our favorites with a Sharpie, so I'll know how far I can go.

When I got new everyday dishes a few years ago, I got four mugs to
match, but had never used them. Today I did, I used one which I
discovered will easily hold 12 oz. so I can safely use the "travel mug"
Vue cups that came with the assortment.
