I have a brother 2500 D that I use maybe 4 times a month. my problem is
when i pick a pattern and click on the sew button after maybe the second
pattern I choose my screen goes blank, I lose the pattern then the screen
turns a bright gold. I have to shut the machine off for awhile before I
can turn it back on and get a pattern back on the screen.

Definitely needs a service repair. Even an electronics tech who can take the
case off and clean all board and connector contacts (they will understand
this phrase) and reassemble. It may be quite simple, just getting a clean-up
job (electronically) or it may be something burned out. I would try the
first notion (pun intended) as the cheapest route, unless you have a handy
repair depot nearby. They don't need to be machine knowledgeable, just
electronics for the first stab at it.
