I have started seeing notices at stores that they do not guarantee
battery back-ups in their games. Is this a problem that I should be
worried about in buying games? How often do they go dead? How long
are they supposed to last? Is there any way to replace them when they
go bad? Thanks,

They do go dead about every 3 years (I've heard, I doubt it's true) and I
believe they aren't replaceable as it's hard as heck just to open the cart...
but the batts I believe are soldered in.
