I did a ton of PU's on the DC Metro this summer. My original post is

but from that I've read so far, the DC Metro is the best place.

A good one that's worked for me was once I was trying to take the subway,
(not NY) and I saw this cute girl reading a poster that had directions or
something on it. I went up to her and asked if she knew which train to take
to get to such and such place, and turned out she was trying to get to the
same place (this is good if you can tell the HB isn't sure how to get where
she's going) as I was. So then I asked her why she was trying to get to that
place, if she was going to work or whatever. That started the conversation,
found out she was from out of state and had just moved to town with her BF.
if I ever run into her again i'll get her email so we can do lunch since we
work within a couple blocks of each other.

I once picked up an HB 8.5, red hair, tremendous rack, and the cutest
Southern accent while waiting for the train in Brooklyn. I tend to whistle
when I wander around, and I had somehow wound up whistling the "Blue
Danube" (I can do pretty much the entire piece) at some length. I noticed
this girl notice me as I walked by, so I stationed myself about eight feet
away, and kept whistling, caught her looking at me three or four times.
When the train came in I got into the same car as she did, sat down across
from her, waited until I'd caught her eye and smiled. She smiled back;
ka-ching! I crossed over, sat next to her, and chatted. Turned out she was
getting off close enough to my (real) stop that I was able to exclaim over
the "coincidence" that we were both headed in the same direction.

I picked up a beautiful black chick, 8+, same station, but just by
starting a conversation. "I take this train every morning, but I don't
think I've seen you here before. Do you live in the neighborhood?"

The best is when you happen to witness an AFC crashing and burning with a
hot babe. All you need to do then is catch her eye, arch an eyebrow, smile
and mutter "Smooth, very smooth..."

Some thoughts:

1) Observe the three second (or "n" second) rule--don't stare or at least
don't _just_ stare. Get yourself noticed and start a conversation. This is
really important. There _are_ plenty of creeps who just stare, and you
want to distinguish yourself from one of these as quickly and firmly as
possible.

2) Don't worry about what other people might think. In New York, at least,
there's very little you can do that other people will consider their
business.

Train stations are great. People don't really have anyplace they can go if
they're waiting for a train. Not only that, but if you work your local
subway station, you'll run into women who live in your neighborhood.
Trains are also good, particularly if there's some distance between stops:
no one ever has to "go do something" on a moving train...
