DETROIT (Reuters) - A room packed with police officers failed to
shield Attorney General John Ashcroft on Thursday from a protester who
accused him of lying about the Sept. 11 attacks on America and
Washington's declared war on terror.

Ashcroft was in Detroit as part of a nationwide tour he kicked off on
Wednesday, aimed at defending provisions of the controversial
anti-terrorism law passed soon after the Sept. 11 attacks on New York
and Washington.

He was about midway through a 25-minute speech, at an event closed to
the public but attended by more than 150 top policemen from across
Michigan, when a self-described follower of perennial presidential
campaigner Lyndon LaRouche interrupted him.

"Mr. Ashcroft, I'm with Lyndon LaRouche. We would like to know which
of your terrorists are going to be used for a new 9/11, you and (Vice
President) Dick Cheney," said the heckler, who got into the room in a
downtown Detroit convention center by posing as a TV reporter.

"Tell them how you lie to the American people," he added.

Ashcroft and more than one red-faced police officer were visibly
angered by the outburst from the man, who then left the convention
center unescorted and joined dozens of anti-government demonstrators
outside.

...One protester who managed to get by security officers heckled
Ashcroft during the speech.

The man, Robert Lucero, 30, of Southfield, a supporter for Lyndon
LaRouche for President, left before he could be escorted out of the
room. Outside the event, Lucero said he believes Ashcroft and Vice
President Dick Cheney are working in league with terrorists to seize
power in the U.S. much like Adolph Hitler used the fire of the
Reichstag - the German Parliament building - to seize power in Germany
in the 1930s.

(Well, never mind what the protestor was protesting. It's even more
idiotic than anything that Ashcroft has ever said.)

This obviously shows more security was needed. But I don't think
Ashcroft can rationally be considered to be responsible for the
breach, unless the idiotic "security" manadates diverted funds needed
for REAL security.

Here are corrected quotes from an eyewitness report(journalists always
seem to botch these things): Realizing that Ashcroft had no intention
of having a
question and answer period, Robert got up and loudly interupted
Ashcroft, "Mr Ashcroft: I am with Lyndon LaRouche and we would like to
know which terrorists you and Dick Cheney intend to use to carry out
this next 9/11 that you guys are organizing?"

Ashcroft was staring at Robert, the room was virtually frozen still
with attention, and all the cameras had swung over to cover the
interruption. Robert continued, "Why don't you tell this audience how
you are a follower of the philosophy of the fascist Leo Strauss; that
you, as a Straussian believe in lying to the public in order to get
tyrannical law?" The secret service began,
finally, to move toward Robert but Ashcroft called them off, as Robert
was leaving the room anyhow. " Enjoy the rest of your tour," Robert
concluded.
