RHC: Hmmm....odd thing to say. What draws you to the conclusion that a
whole nation of people don't believe in hygiene or holidays. We don't
live in igloos anymore and we all have indoor plumbing now, so bathing
and other strange rituals like that are common practice.
We also see tolerance and forgiveness towards others as a positive
thing regardless of past history.

They almost broke up this country because of their separatist bullshit
and many in Quebec still keep at it. Many of my countrymen outside
Quebec wouldn't mind frankly if they did break away. Many are
supremely tired of the government giving Quebec special privileges.
We could all just sit there and watch their economy go to hell, and
other than the damage it would cause to the rest of the country, there
would be little weeping. Personally, I don't feel that way; never
have, but I lose patience at these separatist dinosaurs who continue
to believe they are not part of our country. The culture of the
"quebecois" as they see themselves is a fine one, and one that should
be embraced as part of our country's rich diversity, but WITHIN
Canada, not as a separate country.
So tolerance yes, but with some practical limits......

confederation of two founding group, but it all came down to one province of

understanding plain English.
Canada is a true multicultural society and Quebec is very much a part
of it in spite of what separatists in Quebec would like to believe.
But having tolerance for those who would break up our country (even
while we embrace their culture) would be on the same level as having
tolerance for terrorism and those who blew up the twin towers. There
is a huge difference between having respect for the cultural
differences in a society, and tolerating those who would destroy it.

The sentence you picked up on (in plain English so you can understand
it) means I would no more tolerate the extremism of Quebec separation
than I would the extremism of people who would destroy our countries
by other violent means. THAT is the point of that post.
Going back to the original strain of this thread, I respect the
distinct Quebecois culture within Quebec, and value it as an important
part of our overall Canadian culture, but I'm not going to stand still
for the extremist, separatist part of their culture which almost broke
up Canada a decade or so ago. Just as terrorism today is trying to
destroy the fabric of our two democracies, so too did the separatists
try to destroy our country back then. The difference was, they didn't
do it with bombs; they tried to do it by turning a manipulated free
vote into a majority vote, which would have automatically ripped the
Province out of Confederation, and formed another country. Using the
"system" against you can be just as deadly as any bombs or bullets,
and has a far greater chance of actually succeeding too....
Sometimes I think you pick apart things people say, and take parts of
what's said out of context, just to be a shit disturber.....

It's Pete's choice. I may be leaving this world soon and I want to at
least try to make things right with anyone I may have offended. I
don't think I've ever done anything bad to Pete -- just argued with
him online and been my usual, somewhat caustic self in the process.
If he decides to play nice that's good. If not it's not on my head.
The doctors say it's a matter of a few months now, but I don't really
feel as bad as they say I should at this point. I may surprise them
yet. I'm at peace with God about dying though of course I'd rather
wait a little longer -- say 30-40 years.
Meanwhile, I'm thankful that most of you guys have chosen to be kind
or at least neutral. Know this much, please. Much as we disagree on
business matters, I wish all of you good success not just for the new
year but for life. If any of you ever do show up I haven't lost my
touch on the grill you know. :^)

You are angry because your Mom, who was probably a wonderful perosn (no sarcasm,
I'm sure she was great) passed away and you're afraid that I will live. Well,
be at peace, Pete. All my doctors and even the oncology and hospice staff say
the same thing. I'm dying. They guess about 3 more months minimum now but they
keep extending that. They're probably right in the long run. The tumors are
spreading to new areas and the ones I already have are growing.
I could go on like this for some time it seems. No one is sure because
practically no one (not sure if there is one person or no one at this point)
with this type of metastasis has lived this long before. I'm not looking for
pity. I just want to make peace with those around me. If it makes you feel
better to keep on hating me for some imagined slight, so be it. That's on your
head -- not mine.

I don't believe it is hypocritical to try being a better person
regardless of the impetus, if the change comes from the heart - which I

Now me - I'm still a miserable, cynical bastard who is also simple and
direct. So I call 'em like I see 'em. Sometimes my vision is 20/20,
sometimes not.
I'm not trying to start crap, I just believe that people can have an

Random selection. I was planning to get around to the rest, one at a time. I
bear you no ill will, Mark. We've argued and shot insults back and forth for

life is that even the most sincere effort to make amends often falls
upon deaf ears.
Being rejected, isn't always a reflection of some failing on the part of
the person doing the rejecting. Some feel that forgiveness is giving
past poor behavior a pass and, to them, that isn't acceptable.
Fair enough from their perspective.
That isn't how I see it. IMHO, forgiveness is letting go of past
resentments, though the actions are remembered. As we are fond of
saying in another forum I participate on, "a resentment is me drinking
poison, hoping you die..."
From my perspective, offering amends is a way of making peace with my
own poor behavior. I have found that as long as the offer is honestly
extended, the manner in which it is received has only a little effect on
the outcome. I meant it - and should the person have a change of heart
later on (which has happened) I follow through.
The honest intentions (which is known ONLY to the person extending the
olive branch) has more to do with coming to peace with myself than any
forgiveness I may have garnered from others. By the same token, amends
offered with less than rigorous honesty doesn't help what you see in the
mirror regardless of any forgiveness from others.
It all boils down to the fact that what I think about myself is far more
important than what others may think of me.

That may be. If Mike S. had seen what was coming do you think he would

Robert a tremendous gift. Not all of us have much of a chance to make
amends before He calls us to Him. And that is putting about as much of
a "postive spin" on the situation as I can. What Robert's going through
still sucks but I have to admire him for reaching out after all these
years. He's posted a lot of hateful, hurtful things. You and Pete
should read the story of "the prodigal son" again. I figure Robert's
been about as "prodigal" as you can get. I just hope Pete has a good
