Go to one of those check cashing stores to change a safe contact after
he supposedly did a full system test t and
find nothing wrong ass hole did not know how to test it he did however
break a contact on a side door I had to replace becuse he didnt have a
simple $3.00 contact with him what a bozo
Get called to a dollar store to fix front door contact where a tech
came and supposedly repaired the front door contact which has one of
those metal z brackets and extra long/wide switch because it swings
both ways whats moron do puts a small magnet on door and leaves never
checks system and goes home.
Get called to another check store for false alarm problem with a safe
contact to find it was still tied into one of those old potter safe
systems which was suppose to have been disconnected 5 yrs ago.
needless to say battery was never changed either and every time lights
blinked the alarm would false also found the cell unit installed with
antenna inside the alarm system can boy that works real good.
Needless to say both techs are whining because there not getting paid
for lousy work.
but as long as these morons are out there and keep up the lousy work I
will always have good paying side work.
I sure hope you have them sign off that the job is working when you
leave. With stupid mistakes being made, once you touch the job, no
matter who made the mistake, it's now also YOUR problem.
I've gotta say, I'd never do work like that, nice side money or not.
Too much risk for me to take a chance on, in following assholes
around.
Not to mention chasing after payment for the work once you are done.
I always get sign off and send test signals and document everything.
at this point its so bad couple of the district managers only want me
in there stores.there so tired of the crap.
Many of the people who work at alarm companies don't know how the alarms
work, let alone criminals!

Isn't that where you'd normally install a panel?
Unless, of course, it's for a bank. Then the panel goes in the underground
tunnels.

O come on now!
Talk about not knowing how alarm systems work.
It doesn't make any difference WHERE the equipment is located.
Everyone knows that all you need is a code reader that you attach to
any two wires anyplace in the world and it will scan every possible
code of the alarm system that you are interested in and find the right
one in 5 seconds.
Boy do I keep my code reader safe and secure so that no one can use if
for doing bad things. I do however, occasionally rent it to movie
studios for making motion pictures.
Only as a last resort should the code reader be used.
If possible though, you should go for the secret tunnel... that way you can
also splice into the cameras and loop the video so it looks like nothing is
happening.
Come to think of it though, I have a hard enough time getting electricians
to install an outlet above a suspended ceiling for me. How do these
installers have someone build an entire underground tunnel for their panels
and coax junction boxes? I'm starting to think that maybe some of this
movie stuff doesn't really happen.
- Chris
I sometimes think I could find some tunnel experts easier than I could
find an electrician.
I used to complain about all the garbage work that I would encounter, not
anymore... I HOPE THESE BIG CHEAP companies keep hiring these substandard
techs, it's GREAT for my business :-))

Really?
My take is that as long as you experienced guys keep bailing them out, the
ADT's of this world will continue to thrive. You can not outmarket them.

Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum
I honestly don't know where I would be without the help of ADT. They
advertise to the masses and manage to get people who would have never
even thought of security to buy their systems, people I don't have the
time and resources to reach out to. Then 3 years later I swoop in,
offer monitoring at half the price, you know the story. The only
downside is it sometimes takes more time to bring their existing ADT
system up to spec than it would have taken to install a new system.
RHC: So true! I simply do not understand a company that puts out the
millions of dollars of advertising that they do each year, then
tolerates losing a significant number of their accounts through poor
monitoring, mediocre service and installations, and lengthy wait
times. Like some other big companies, they too have the internal
resources to be a real market leader, but fail to do so because of an
inability to control and manage their large bureaucracy. All my
takeover customers tell me the same thing - they left because of
ridiculous pricing and / or bad or non existent service !!!!! Managers
who see these attrition rates as just the price of doing business, and
not as a failure to perform, should be fired !!
I was reading an interesting observation and business prediction about
the coming decade. This writer was predicting that the consumer in the
years ahead will be looking for a more personal business connection
and will gravitate to businesses providing this more personal level of
service, where the service provider (in whatever industry) truly
listens to them, and responds in a more personal and flexible way to
their buying concerns. It seems things like the internet are drawing
buyers and sellers closer together. People are increasingly no longer
willing to tolerate being considered a marketing resource to be mined
for every last dollar that can be extracted. Companies may finally
have to actually earn the customer's business and do so in a more
personal way.
If this trend is indeed true, small business that understands the
value of good service will see an increase in market share this
decade. It seems, our future looks bright !!!
What is ADT's attrition rate Robert?
RHC: You know darn well that is a highly kept secret for PR reasons.
However, I do know the attrition rate of another large company and
ADT's is equal or worse. So my guess would be somewhere between 7% to
20%. The exact number doesn't matter so much as the fact that they
either don't care, or simply accept it as an unavoidable fact of life
for a large corporation. People accuse me of "hating" ADT which is not
true. I am an ADT third party dealer myself (by default when stations
got bought out, and I still have a few accounts on their station). My
dealings with their internal staff have always been of the highest
order in politeness and efficiency. However, as a company, they do so
much wrong down at the consumer end (where the rubber meets the road)
that I have to wonder who's minding the ship !!
Unknown to me, I once had an ADT employee as a customer until I failed
to bill him properly. When I finally caught up to the situation (no
test signals), he had jumped ship and gone to his own company (for $6
a month). He said that he thought that because I failed to bill him,
that I had gone out of business like a lot of small businesses. I told
him to stop believing ADT's internal propaganda, but by this time it
was too late. His system was a mess and I did spend a lot to time
fixing it up over the years, so perhaps by now, he's had a taste of
ADT's service...:)))

How do you know ADT's is equal or worse than that other large company?
RHC: Another trick question !!
That OTHER large company is the same one that does my monitoring. I
also get a lot of their customers coming to me, largely to save money
though, not because of bad service. I have a gentleman's agreement
with them that I will not takeover their accounts, and bring them back
as third party, since this would be robbing Peter to pay Paul. In
turn, (to my knowledge) they don't interfere with my customers
(although at their rates, that would be a rarity at best). I see how
many of their customers try to come to me. I compare it to the number
of ADT customers that come my way, and draw some inferences from that
comparison, since I know their attrition rate (and it too is growing
out of control).
I know these people well, and they are my "partners" in many ways,
although also competition at the same time. The special team of people
assigned to lower their attrition rate, seem to have their hands tied
in many respects, since large corporations refuse to compromise on
things like price, contracts and warranty coverage. I see these
things, and I'm further convinced that small businesses will always
have a leg up on large corporations (once the customer finally
discovers them)
We have untold numbers of local companies offering monitoring for
$9.95 monthly, with no contract term (although payable a year in
advance so really it's a year). Service and warranty is simply not
discussed and their customers buy on price alone. I get a few of their
customers coming my way as well for the service, which has to be
expensive since they don't make much in the RMR. Unfortunately, these
boards are almost always locked which would be a problem for a lot of
other companies.
The situation is not black and white ! Little guys can be atrocious as
well. There are "little guys" here in town that no one "knowledgeable"
will takeover their accounts - period ! On the other side, I see a
lot of ADT accounts and generally they are at least reasonably well
installed, but often lack full coverage due to initial high prices to
include these zones in the basic system. It's also pretty easy to see
whether the system was initially installed by an ADT dealer or an ADT
company installer. ADT proper seems to prefer more the full hardwired
systems; their dealers not so much, and here is where you see a lot of
the "all in one" squawk boxes and fully wireless systems.
The more I see, the less I worry about our future.....
> RHC: Another trick question !!
How is it a "trick question"? Seemed legit to me. And, OBTW, what was the
other "trick question"?
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought he was subcontracting service for ADT.
I just don't do service work for other alarm companies anymore. Once in a
great while I'll do a complete in exchange for signing the customer to a
monitoring contract, and even those are almost always screwed up. Drives me
to frustration whenever I get involved with somebody else's work.
There is one local guy that I trust to do good work. When he is done it
always works. I've had a couple clients go over to him. I just call him up
and make sure its good to go and I have gotten the monitoring on a couple of
his fire systems. Never had a problem with one of his jobs. I used to work
for him 18 or 19 years ago. LOL.
I don't see how, you talk about ADT's high attrition rate yet you
don't know what that rate is however it's worse than some other
company which means it's somewhere within a 13% spread...
> The situation is not black and white ! Little guys can be atrocious as
> well. There are "little guys" here in town that no one "knowledgeable"
> will takeover their accounts - period
You never seem to mention them, you only seem to make baseless
statements about ADT.
Their attrition rate could be a tad higher these days what with the
record unemployment numbers coming out of the US. It's a sad fact that
"security" takes a back seat when the going gets tough. People would
rather do without monitoring service than lose their cable TV or
Internet. In Vancouver & environs, ADT remains a force to be reckoned
with and those numbers Bob speculated about are more than likely lower
than 7%.
I'm trying to work up proposals for subbing out service work for
companies who have accounts in this area but no tech's (typically large
chain stores) - what is a fair rate (generally)?
I sure wish I had paid more attention to the money side of things...
8 years ago when I did service for Monkey I charged $95.00 per hour
plus $40.00 for travel. The Mormon doorknockers paid more, even though
they were Monkey dealers. Those bastards paid heavy coin for me to
service their systems in NYC. $75.00 an hour travel, 2 hour minimum,
and $95.00 labor 1 hour minimum. Sum it up to $245.00 for a basic
service call. Of course they had no other option at the time and I
wasn't feeling very benevolent. I have one service ticket from them
where they paid me in excess of $1100.00. Dealer programs will take a
clubbing if you're the only game in town so pluck a few needy dealer
programs and bludgeon the crap out of them. Have them send you
equipment ahead of time to do service and never take a dollar out of
pocket for them.
Treat them like they treat their customers, and when they delay your
check due to clerical backlog make certain to delay service to the
complaining customers. That will rattle them enough to learn to pay on
time.
Make certain to grab any referrals you can from the clients and use
them for your own sales.
Again, show no sympathy to any company that cannot service it's own
clients!!!!!!!! They are whores and should be treated accordingly. Rob
the fuckers blind and smile when you do it. Snatch up the client when
their contract expires.
It's dirty pool but if they were concerned about their clients they
wouldn't be subbing out work in the first place. They'd be using
properly trained in-house techs.
I think its higher than that the one ADT dealer I did work for had a
90% loss from ones I know he did after 3 years all the yard signs
changed.
Ahhhhhhhhh!
You're such a breath of fresh air.
And Bob C thinks that *I'm* ruthless.
And Me?
I LOVE it when you talk that way!
If I didn't know better I'd think your were from Brooklyn rather than
a Wus from the Bronx.
RHC: No Jim, I've never said you were ruthless. You and I have simply
agreed to disagree on certain business practices. However ...Tom
now...he's ruthless.....:)))))
Tom you really need to learn English
South Bronx?

Might be the safest place to be anyway.
Who would be dumb enough to set off a nuclear device there?
Every one would see the mushroom cloud and when they went in to
inspect ..... it wouldn't look any different than it did before.
Might improve things
Nothing would survive but the roaches.
Damn... they'd probably all speak French too.

I was waiting for you to say it before I did, Graham. :^)
