You've seen photographs of the Pyramids. Maybe you've marveled at the wonders
of Stonehenge. So, what have you built lately? Here's your chance to leave
your mark on the landscape!
Work has begun at Appel Farm in Elmer, NJ, on Beauty and The Beast, a
Community Arts Project led by artist-in-residence, Ava Blitz. This comprises
of an outdoor sculpture, consisting of over 100 individual pieces which will be
contained in a concrete hollow, measuring 30 feet in diameter. If you are
interested in getting involved in something monumental this fall, here is an
opportunity that is truly unique in every sense of the word! There will be an
informal public meeting at Appel Farm on Sunday, September 9th at 2:00PM.
Refreshments will be served and there is no admission charge. For more
information or directions, visit our web site (www.appelfarm.org) or call
Joseph Patti at 1-800-394-1211.
The Community Arts Project places you at the right hand of the artist in the
creation of a public sculpture. The finished work will be a permanent part of
the geography of this rural arts center. This is an experience that you will
remember for years to come!
Ava Blitz holds a Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Georgia
(Athens, GA). Formerly the Fine Arts Program Director at Bryn Mawr College,
she has studied and worked throughout the United States,
as well as in France, Italy and Japan. Her vision for the residency is to
combine earth art, sculpture and landscape architecture, to create a large
public work of art.
The third and final phase of the Community Arts Project will take place
beginning in September 2001. There are many ways in which all kinds of people
can become involved. No particular skills or previous arts experience are
required. Some of the work is strenuous and involves heavy lifting. Some is
less so and will involve coloring the actual sculpture pieces. Volunteers are
not merely observers but make a meaningful contribution with hands-on
participation in the working process. Work sessions take place on weekdays
after school and on weekends.
This is a rare opportunity to join in the camaraderie of an exciting
community-based arts experience. Make new friends, learn new skills, be a part
of an historic event. The result of the collective achievement will be on
permanent display and viewed by thousands of visitors to Appel Farm each year.
Appel Farm is accessible to patrons with disabilities. Hearing or
speech-impaired patrons can contact Appel Farm by calling (TTY) 1-800-852-7899.
