Art communities in LA (???)

Does anyone know something about art life in LA area?
I am a young artist (painter and graphic illustrator) and I want to try
to develop my art.
I have recently relocated in California and I heard many rumors about
art communities and many art-related events taking place in LA area.

But thus far I failed to come across a single person who knows something

for sure. Looks like all these things exist in other reality/dimension
or somewhere in underground-like environment, inaccessible by bare
mortals.

How I might to approach artist community if it exists?
Any information or a lead will be greatly appreciated!

Have you checked out the Calendar section of the LA Times and the various
little weeklies ? they list lots of local events. The biggest difficulty
with LA is that it is so spread out so that some events in Orange County
might be too far from where you are. Laguna Beach, Corona del Mar are big
areas. San Diego has a large art population
Venice, Santa Monica. the Lofts in LA off the 5 Fwy... all are art
communities of sorts.
you need to visit some of the larger art supply stores as well

there is art center in pasadena and cal arts in valencia. both are good
schools.
