Does anyone know if there are sealed batteries that will replace regular
fillable ones?`
Are there cross references?

YB10L-A2 for instance.

Or am I going to run into charging systems on older bikes that are
incompatible with sealed batteries?

Anime arimasu ka? (Got Anime?)

The gell batteries for motorcycles and scooters are interchangeable with
lead-acid batteries. As long as it's the right voltage, capacity
(amp-hours), size, and terminals, you can use it to replace a like
lead-acid type.

The AGM/"Gel"/SLA/MF are interchangeable if you have the same specs,
and there must be one somewhere......usually some Chinese type which is OK
if you top it up once a month or leave it on charge...but the price is
right.

I prefer the non MF or non Screwed, since a lot of Sealed batteries
are still WET, and they do loose some water if your in a hurry charging
them.

Most ppl call WET SEALED Gel/AGM and other names, but they are still
WET on the manufacturers Specs., so "regular refillable ones" are an asset.

A lot of MF batts are made that way for public safety, since a lot
of ppl don't realize the possible hazards despite all the sticker postings
on them.

A reliable source for aftermakets and availability would be:

..............the there's google, where these battery matches would come in
quantity purchased with no warranty if purchased "wholesale"....

Although AGM needs a higher Voltage to properly charge, voltage that
your Scooter/M-cycle's alternator does not generate enough of in city, some
hi-way environments, unless your in a dirt biking or other racing
environment.

AGM's usually need a monthly topping charge which neat items like
the Battery Tender Jr/Plus (13.3float) do NOT have, but the Optima and most
small car chargers have when in AGM/Gel mode (13.7float).

The older chargers will charge, but not to the AGMs FULL capacity,
but some older chargers have an absorption charge of 15volt/7.5volt as in
Foto SLA/AGM batteries...

This may be a little late for the OP, but spring is coming, so maybe
somebody will be interested in this link:

http://www.yuasabatteries.com/pdfs/2009_yuasa_apps_specs.pdf

There is a cross-reference for a number of non-Yuasa brands starting
around page 14.

Regarding charging, I believe the only important incompatibility would
be with gel batteries, which are aimed at 'deep-cycle' applications and
so are extremely rare in the small sizes that bikes and scoots use
(maybe non-existent for all I know). The most common sealed batteries
aka MF/'maintenance-free' types of batteries apparently require
fractionally higher voltages than the refillable kind, but the
difference is something like a tenth or fifth of a volt, so I wouldn't
worry, I would think the difference isn't noticeable, after all, the
charging voltage varies quite a lot depending on engine speed.

My 4 stage Shumacher SC1200A absorb charges at less voltage in
AGM/Gel, but the float/charge is about 2 volts higher....

Most M/Cycle Scoot batteries are some form of AGM, but Gels are more
like Golf carts, RVs, and are being replaced by AGMs, which vary a whole
hell of a lot in quality, making a charging decision a bit more
difficult.....

AGMs never seem to heat up, AFAIK, but some expert may know better.

Not to late for the OP.

That is a very useful site for battery info. Thanks.
