Why should they look different? Bodily symmetry has survival advantages,
as does stereoscopic sight and opposable thumbs. They look no more human
than does a chimp.

Biologists have studied the variety of life here on Earth. The conclusion
is that life does not have to be like us to be intelligent. Even though
symmetry does seem to prevail, there is no guarantee that intelligent
life will have two arms, two legs, a head connected to the body via a
neck, two eyes, one mouth, one nose, two ears and say "Take me to your
leader". By all accounts (of the biologists) a cuddlefish is intelligent,
as is a dolphin. Most dogs I've met seem to be intelligent. Then there is
the paper written by Dr Dollahite, who claims that intelligence is
manifested in the connections between simple functional units, thus
indicating that a blob of otherwise insignificant bacteria cells could
collectively exhibit intelligence and even culture. Since as far as we
know, bacteria are the dominant life in the universe, and since they are
definitely the dominant life on Earth, why do we insist that aliens
*must* be grey, look like us, be anorexic and want to rape white trailer-
trash? - That simply makes no sense to me.
If we are to believe those who claim to have met the aliens, then the
only logical explanation is that they are from Earth, even though they
have evolved a bit and thus are time-travellers. Otherwise, if they are
not from Earth and from another time, then we must conclude that the
greys are simply the delusional manifestations of people not familiar
with the vast diversity of intelligent life. I don't see any other
logical alternative.

Nobody says they have to be like that, or at least, that's not what I
said.
But there are many survival advantages with the way earthly life
developed, and ISTM that alien life may will exhibit some of the
characteristics we commonly see here on eath.
Especially if they are the kind of aliens who are capable of building
interstellar transportation. I'd think it likely that they have some sort
of strong opposable appendage, as just one example. Without one, it would
be less likely that they could manipulate huge chunks of study materials.

My point is that the survival advantages that gave the majority of life
their shape are not applicable to us. Since all life on Earth is not like
us, why should we assume aliens have to be like us? The logical
explanation is that they don't.

A gelatinous blob has a greater lifting capability than human appendages
due to the fact that basic physical laws of hydrodynamical pressure can
be applied. So if the requirement is greater lifting capability then
human-like appendages would be out. So why should we assume that they
must have them?
