The real question is: If everyone gets freaked out by the LHC, global
warming, UFOs, etc and it turns out that none of those things are as
harmful as the reaction to them, why does *that* matter?

An example of what I am talking about -> Al Gore among others claim
that by changing to compact flourescent lightbulbs (CFLs) we can
help save the Earth from global warming despite the *fact* that
there is no evidence of said warming. In fact there is proof
that the mercury in the CFLs causes Minamata disease and there is
some indication that flourescent lightbulbs in general may be
connected to Autism.

That is a common misconception. In fact most black holes in the centers
of galaxies tend to be quiescent, ie not eating anything. That is due
to the absence of material around most black holes that are at the
centers of galaxies.
