For many years there has been a suspicion that there is
such a thing as a �myopic personality�. While psychometric
evidence remains inconclusive anecdotal evidence persists.
Teddy Roosevelt for instance was a famous myope and well
known for his commanding presence and bold behavior, his
famous charge up San Juan Hill is an example.
As a graduate physicist (currently a psycho-physicist) it
is my intuition that there is no such thing biologically
speaking as a �myopic personality� but in fact it is the
wearing of strong negative eyeglass lenses that causes the
reputed effect.
20% of eyeglass wearers are nearsighted and must wear
negative lenses. A peculiar property of negative lenses is
that actually make things smaller. The corrected myope sees
a smaller world and I suspected that this might account for
the alleged commanding presence, confidence and remarkable
enthusiasm of many nearsighted people.
Being an introverted, shy and fearful person myself it
occurred to me that wearing negative eyeglasses might be the
long sought remedy for me. The problem is that you can�t
just willy nilly throw on a pair of negative lenses and
start enjoying the pleasures of a �smaller and less
intimidating world�. However, I recently discovered another
interesting optical fact. Contact lenses don�t magnify at
all, while eyeglasses do. It seems that the reason for this
is that contacts rest right on the eye while there is a 15
mm space between the eye and ordinary glasses. As a
physicist it immediately occurred to me that I could combine
positive contact lenses and negative eyeglasses and the
refractions would cancel but the magnification wouldn�t thus
leaving me seeing a �smaller world�.
The problem is that you can�t simply go on line and order
the contact lenses and some negative glasses. It turns out
the optical cartel has the market cornered in that you need
a prescription just to purchase them. However, I was
already wearing contact lenses and was able to help myself
to a pair of discarded negative 1.5 eyeglasses I found in
the recycle bin at the opticians office. I then inserted
two contact lenses in each eye (I knew you could do this
because people do it accidentally all the time). I then put
on the negative eyeglasses, and voila�. there it was right
in front of me�. the world I had always dreamed of. The
world was about 5% smaller. For instance a 6� man standing
in front of me now became 5� 8� tall, a significant
reduction in physical presence!
I have been wearing this optical set up for 5 days now,
in crowds, driving in heavy traffic, during interviews, in
restaurants, shops and malls and I�m here to tell you, for
an oppressed and long suffering introvert like me, it�s the
greatest thing since sliced bread! The increased spring in
my step, the renewed curiosity and interest in common
things, the enthusiastic zest for simply sightseeing and
small talk is overwhelming. The increased confidence and
pleasure of social interaction is remarkable. Even the moon
looks smaller. Fact is, there is no substitute for a
feeling of command and dominance, there is nothing that
feels better in life than having the upper hand!
Finally, for those of you with greater awareness, I will
mention that this experiment is more than simply an arcane
scientific novelty. It turns out that it is a direct
manifestation of the central core of all psychological
theory, the theory of God itself. It turns out that
�Heaven� is simply a smaller and slower version of this
world and while this optical setup can�t slow the world
down, it does make it smaller� and this experiment is
actually a first step over the threshold into the �unseen
world� of Heaven.
Finally, as I have remarked, it is impossible for me to
refine or advance this crude initial experiment because you
need an opticians prescription to buy either contact lenses
or negative eyeglasses in the US, UK and Canada. In any
other country such items are sold over the counter without a
prescription In the larger airports in Germany for instance
there are vending machines which will dispense contact
lenses. If anybody knows of a potentially interested
researcher or research laboratory who has the ability to
access these common and cheap items and would like to
collaborate with me on further research, or perhaps publish
a paper, please forward this post to him and tell him to
contact me by responding to this usenet post on
sci.physics.relativity.
