My C 550 works with a 4 GB SD card, so I would think the 510 would.

You might have to track down a 4GB SD which isn't a 4GB SDHC, but since
you wrote SD, I'm guessing you know that.

I'd say try it and let us know, unless someone who actually does know
posts a better answer soon.

If it fails in the c510, you could use it in some other device :-)

Yes. According to Garmin the maximum size SD card for the StreetPilot c500
series is 4GB.

FAT will usually work, sometimes called FAT16. You can get that from
various flavors of Windows (2000, XP, Vista, 7). The sequence they used
was FAT16 > FAT32 > NTFS for the most part and people making devices
that read various flavors of SD cards did not always get them to work
with every one.

As a earlier post says, at the 4GB size there are SDHC compatible cards
and earlier cards that are not SDHC compatible. Not sure what the
implication of that is for you. If you can find or borrow any of the
cards try to read it (import places or whatever), if you get a read
error that will disqualify that size or type of card.

I strongly suspect Fat32.

It's a guess, but it's rare to see devices requiring NTFS on SD cards.

E.g., I just plugged my cellphone in and looked; its microSD card is
16GB FAT32.

The 2GB card in my Nuvi 765 is FAT32 formatted.

I'm very surprised. I thought this had something to do with the maximum file
size. Can a fat23 formatted card contain a large .IMG file of nearly 4 GB?

My understanding is that the max. file size with FAT32 is (2 to the power 32)
minus 1. That is 4 GB (-1)
