I have a GPS-II+ which I have been very happy with for a couple of
years. I use it occasionally on land but bought it with the intention
of having a handheld reference (I don't own a boat) when waterborne. I
dive, which requires the use of the GPS as a navigational aid, but not
as the sole direction finder...

I have a database of waypoints denoting the dive sites I have saved. I
have recently had a look at some manufacturers' sites and have
marvelled at all the new wizardry that seems to be available.

Now can anyone advise whether I ought to get hold of one of these new
marine GPS receivers (Magellan Marine, GPS-V or GPS-76) or am I being
blinded by science and will find I need none of the new features that
are touted by the manufacturers own websites?

Any help much appreciated...

I know it's bad form to reply to one's own posts, but I find it quite
disappointing to find that no-one out there has an opinion or can
offer up any assistance on this...

Dear Simon,
Have you checked into the Garmin 176? I have one and it's great for the
boat, car and can even be handheld. My only complaint is that it's a little
hard on batteries.

I recently purchased a Meridian Marine, and I am pleased with the
performance.. It has quite a few "obstructions" (wrecks) in the built in
basemap which might be good for diving purposes. It certainly works well for
fishing purposes.
