So no one in a GPS group has any knowledge of these or similar units? Pretty
sad really. Guess I will just have to buy one and try it.

I've got one of the Holux devices, it seems to work well, but I use it
rarely. Built well, waterproof with a good magnet built in too. Dunno
about the GlobalSat.

Goofy Holux driver disk does create a start-menu folder in XP that is
deformed somehow and I can't delete it. Others (Google...) have had
similar problems but their techniques to get rid of it didn't work for
me.

You may see if this is good for you. It is USB but I believe the gps
is not as sensitive as Sirf III. But it comes with the latest Garmin
map 2009 and if you are not driving in NYC which is very demanding,
you be ok

http://www.gpscity.ca/item-garmin-gps-18-usb-deluxe/oem18usbdlx.htm

The unit comes with 2008 map and you have to load it up to your
netbook I believe. You are entitled to one free update from Garmin.
When ordering make sure you order the free updated map the same time.
Pain but it is cheap, effective and Garmin

Sirf3 itself is obsolete (good, very good, but obsolete today IMHO)
I don't know the other one, but the price seems high for what it
offers.

Why not get a BT+USB like this one:
http://www.esseshop.it/transystem-iblue-747a-plus-antenna-gps-data-logger-66-canali-p-2937.html
It's new GPS technology and has also many features like datalogging
(stand-alone, of course) , Server based extended ephemeris for 1 week,
BT, ecc... and is not much more expensive after all

Cheers.

Around three/four times the price by the time I get it to Australia and not
being able to translate all the technical detail I am not sure it will do
what I want.

Thanks.

Here you have the spec in english:
http://www.transystem.com.tw/products/index_detail.php?mcat_no=2&cat_no=31&pno=47&ver=ch
It does much more than a simple USB receiver. Of course, if you don't
want any other features, you may find more cheaper devices like this
one (same producer):
http://www.transystem.com.tw/products/index_detail.php?mcat_no=2&cat_no=32&pno=10&ver=ch
As you can see there is not a cable version with new chipset... USB-
Cable only seems to be nearly out of the market, so that you find only
products based on obsolete chipsets.

Thanks very much for this info, I like the bluetooth unit and one place has
them on special for $59 including a mount but their online system is failing
when I try and buy.

Perhaps I will try again tonight.

Regards.

I just add another note: keep in mind that usually the BT units does
not have fully working USB!
The USB is used only for recharging the battery, not for the data
comunication.
So if you need also the USB connection, make sure you buy a device
that has the data transmissione over USB.
The model I suggested have a fully working USB

I have decided to go with a different type of unit, the one I am getting is
actually a data logger, does a lot more.

Cheers.
