I purchsed this unit yesterday, and when I registered it online I was
immediately told that there was an update available. I spent some time
playing with the unit and then tried to d/l the update - no luck. After
a brief (and firm) email to the company, I was able to download the
latest patch (2.14). The trick, as they finally told me, was to enter
1.68 as your current revision number, regardless of what version you
actually have <sigh>. They claim they'll fix the website "soon".

The result of this update is, well, shocking!

The Firmware version has gone from 1.62.03.02 to 2.14.00.02
The Nav version has gone from 1.56 to 2.12
The Outdoor version has gone from 1.42 to 1.52

All other version numbers remain the same.

Before you do the installation you are warned that this is a one-way
operation - there's no way to go back to the older versions!

The obvious immediate changes are:

Colour: there doesn't appear to be any colour control other than night
and day mode.
The Mode selection icons, indeed ALL the icons are completely changed.
Even the vehicle arrowhead is different!!
The whole look of the machine is completely different - much more
Garmin-like (realizing that this is my first GPS and I've only played
with a Garmin briefly!).
The "zoom level" indicator no longer shows up when you change zoom
levels ("-" and "+").
You can drag the screen around in 3d mode just as you used to in 2D
mode. The "menu" button is now in the center at the bottom, and when you
drag the screen it changes to say "Esc" -- pressing that returns you to
your current/actual position.
Pressing the direction pad (which is in the upper left corner) brings
you to the "current position" screen which looks quite different
although it contains the same information.
To the left of the menu button is the current time (when not routing),
and to the right of it is your current speed.
When you are routing, you see the next turn arrow at the very left,
distance to the turn next, then "Menu", then "arrival" which toggles to
"remaing".

The POI display has changed - they seem to have amalgamated icons, so
that there are very few icons on screen, but clicking on (or near) one
gives you a list of all the POIs near to there.

To get the list of turns during a route, you now click on the "next
turn" arrow instead of the "next street name" bar (at least, that seems
to be the case playing here at home).

And finally, it is now possible to enter a Canadian Zip code without
being told you've made an error!! (Since I'm in Canada, this is a big
deal :-) )

If there's interest, I'll post my actual driving impressions after I've
had a chance to actually drive! :-) It's 2 AM here and I'm about to go
to bed.

Cheers, Dallas

Thanks for posting this info. I was aware of he upgrade, but had not
done it yet. So, my question is: are you happy with the changes?

Thanks! Jeff

My 2 Cents...

I like the upgrade.

I have the Crossover and the upgrade changed the look of it quite a bit.
It was all for the better as far as I am concerned.

I did the update and really like it. The graphics are a little more
softer on the eyes. The interface seems a little easier to navigate
once you figure out where things are. Thanks! Jeff
