For a laptop I'd pop out the battery, but how to stop degradation with
Nuvi's when not used/needed for a while ?

I have an old 265T and only use it extensively every few months on long
drives. original battery lasted years then dies so it wouldn't turn on. I
bought a new battery last winter and it was Ok for about 6 months but since
spring/summer when I use it I get the " Low Battery" message when I turn it
on and if I don't plug it in within a minute or two - it's dead. Perhaps I
have defective battery but I'm not a chemist. I figure that it was fine for
6 months so not a defect. Just wondering ... should I have plugged it in
every week for a few hours ? Leave in house on PC when not planning a trip
?

In general I only use it around here for traffic info - backups/detours etc.
Last week coming back from 100 miles away I heard major accident so plugged
it in/turned on for traffic info and to be able to press DETOUR. Worked Ok
but Low Battery signal after turning on. After then leaving charging in car
for a few days - still Low Battery if unplugged for a few minutes then dies.
So it wasn't that it was low and 'just needed a charge". Ongoing issue.
Worst case I'll just use plugged in but wondering how to best maintain
battery life ( in next one maybe)
Thanks for any advice from those with experience.

Sounds like the replacement battery is poor quality, but it is still
not good to let it go dead in any case.

I plug mine in every month or so to keep it above 50%.

Eventually, any battery will die for good, but 6 months is rather
short.

I don't know the Nvi. What battery or batteries does it use?

Generally the idea is to use Sanyo eneloop batteries or similar
ones that do not have any significant self-discharge and avoid
all other NiCd and NiMH batteries like the plague.

Also avoid deep-discharging them or, even worse, reverse-charing
them. That can kill them in no time. It happens when two or more
are connected in series and get discharged. Then the weakest one
can be deep- or reverse-charged.

For Li-Ion accumulators the rule is to have them at some
intermediate charge when you store them for a longer time,
because being topped up strains them and being deep-discharged
kills them. Normally their built-in electronics protect them
from either fate, but when the battery is stored for a long
time, then the electronics are powerless against the admittedly
very slow self-discharge.

A built-in battery that is inaccessible to the user.

OTOH, there are replacement batteries that come with a tool or two to
open the case and instructions.

By coincidence, less than a day later Sunshine posted some real
information in response to another post.

If you are still curious about this, you can look at that reply:
