Ok, you're probably thinking "StreetPilot 2720! What's a guy still doing
with that?" Well, I've used it for years on my motorcycle, and although my
new Gold Wing has a very competent built-in Garmin GPS, the old SP 2720
still does stuff the built-in unit doesn't (mileage logs, statistics,
elapsed time, e.g.). So, because it's motorcycle-certified and still works
great, I still use it.

Several months ago I updated to the most recent maps, City Navigator North
America 2013.40, and used it without incident. But twice recently, it has
suddenly locked the maps and deleted all the user information, leaving only
three Garmin waypoints and the basemap. There were no unusual known
circumstances when it happened and neither time was a route involved. Each
time, I've been able to reload the maps from the MyGarmin website and
transfer the user information from backups in MapSource or BaseCamp.

Any thoughts as to the cause? Hardware? Software? Map incompatibility for
an older unit (altough I used it without incident for several months)?
Corrupted satellite data packets?

TIA

Not familiar with the device, but does it do something similar if you remove
built-in batteries? I have in mind that older devices have a small battery
dedicated to maintaining data in absence of main battery. But these backups
gradually fail, so it has no short-term memory...

Thanks - I didn't think of the built-in battery. I've never opened the
unit, so if that's the case I may need to get refurbished unit from Garmin.
I suppose I'll open a support call to see if there are known problems with
the new maps on older units (although as noted in my original email, I'd
used them for several months without a problem) or whether I should get new
hardware.
