I am also in the UK and have an Etrex H, mine came from Canada as a
present, as a cousin was coming over to visit.

I am not sure by what you mean by non-H sries, if you buy a Yellow
Etrex make sure the software is version 3.xx.

As a basic GPS I find it great, I use it check my position and to
produce a GPX file of my walk, so I can upload to my website, but you
still need a map to use with it.

A quick search will find it at much lower prices elsewere in the UK.

I can think of no reason to buy a pre-"H" model. The reception would be
noticeably inferior; especially under tree cover, and all the other features
would be the same. I am fairly certain the accessories would be compatible
with either. Neither has USB interface, which is unfortunate.

The H series has the high sensitivity receiver in it, so it purports to be
better under trees and in deep valleys.

I believe so (but I've only got a H series one, so can't be sure).

I can't think of any reason why you would want to go for the older, lower
sensitivity one.
