Under C:\Garmin\poi I have several GPI files loaded
In addition, I am using a tool that saves POIs using the
POI Loader to a file that sees to always be named 'poi.gpi'.
It now seems that the category saved via the POI Loaded is always listed
last in the 'Custom POIs' menu, forcing me to scroll down to find it.
Does anyone know what influences the sorting of the POI categories in
the 'Custom POIs' section? I tried
1. playing with the filenames of the GPI files (capitalization,
renaming poi.gpi. to 1poi.gpi, lowercasing the names of the
other GPI files)
2. changing the category name in the gpi file in several ways
to no avail.
Any help is appreciated
Hi Mathias,
Garmin has obviously programmed its awful POI Loader to overwrite the
existing poi.gdi :-(
Moreover, I do not see any possibility of ordering personal pois, since
they seem to carry some kind of internal heading.
However, if your device can read SD cards, you may want to reproduce the
tree structure of your Garmin unit and then copy your data into
respective folders under X:\Garmin\Poi\ . Then you can access these
files via "Zieleingabe" -"Extras".
Happy New Year

If you want to use multiple files, eg "permanent" and "changeable" as I
do, you have to upload one with POILoader then rename it via fileexplorer
then upload the next one.

They are not sorted in the file directory and the Garmin doesn't have
that function. Like running the DIR command in a DOS command line, you
get a list of files in the order they were written. AFAICT, POILoader
when crating the poi file for upload, sorts the categories/entries and
writes them in that order. Catagories will then be displayed in that
order with POIs displayed in order of "as the crow flies" distance.
You can overcome some of the limitations by storing your POIs in seperate
sub-directories and sub-sub-directories, naming the directories in a way
which will alphabetise them to your preferred order when POILoader sorts/
converts for upload

At this stage, ie in the Garmin unit, the multiple POI files are just
merged as they are read in.

You cannot simply assume someone is honest
just because they are not an MP.
Yeah, but I upload one with the POI Loader. Those are the POIs that
change quite often. The POI Loader generates these into a file called
'poi.gpi'.
Then I have several more static gpi files with things like redlight
cameras, ATMs etc.

The strange thing is that neither the filename of the GPI file on the
filesystem, nor the internal heading seems to influence the sorting. It
sorts them by some other means (or I am missing something).
my beef is that when I select
Where to\
My Locations\
Go Home
Favorites
Recent Selections
My Current Location
Custom POIs\
All Categories
Wireless Locations
Redlight Cameras
Roadblocks
...
ATM locations
<top heading of my poi.gpi file>\
category1
category2
category3
...
where "Wireless Locations", "Redlight Cameras", "Roadblocks" and so on
are each based on a separate *.gpi file, while
"category1,..." are the internal/2nd level headings/categories of the
poi.gpi file.
I want it to look like this:
Where to\
My Locations\
Go Home
Favorites
Recent Selections
My Current Location
Custom POIs\
All Categories
<top heading of my poi.gpi file>\
category1
category2
category3
...
Wireless Locations
Redlight Cameras
Roadblocks
...
ATM locations
Does anyone know how to do this by
naming the categories in the poi.gpi file
renaming the gpi files
changing the filesystem dates of the gpi files?
any help is appreciated

You're way off base. The OP wants his categories in a set order.
He is asking if there is any way to put numerous POI files in some sort of
order.
I have about a dozen different POI files that I can access.
The only way I have found to put them in any order at all is to reload them.
They will appear in the order in which there were loaded.
That is a pain I realize but it is the only solution I have found.
So, about once a year I redo mine POI files and reload them, then just make
do until next year.
Sorry, that is the best I have found.

Again, the guy was asking about having his CATEGORIES sorted into some
sort of order not individual Points Of Interest.

Changing the name doesn't matter and affects nothing. They are displayed
in the order in which they are stored in the Windows directory when
POILoader converts/sends them to the GPS. Some people like their
categories in their chosen order not some apparently random order.
Getting categories into a chosen order is easy. Just start with an empty
folder, then copy the .csv or .gpx files into that folder in the order
you want the SatNav to display them. Each .csv or .gpx file will appear
as a category on the SatNav. You can create subcategories by
putting .csv and/or .gpx files into folders within the "root" folder used
as the source for POILoader.
Naturally, one has to always start with an empty folder when building the
source files for POILoader otherwise any new .csv or .gpx files will
appear at the end of the category list, or, if any files have been
deleted, the news ones may appear in that place instead.
It all hinges on the historical way MSDOS was designed to most
efficiently use the FAT file/directory structure., ie use the first
available "slot" or, if there are none, add to the end. The DIR command
in MSDOS by default listed files in the order found. You had to specify
a sort order if you wanted them sorted. It has not changed. (other than
it seem to default to an alphabetic sort now, but that's still not what
OS level directory read functions see.)

It doesn't know how to do that. It has no concept, not even an
algorithm, to manage anything so complex. It displays them in the order
they were found/converted by POILOader.
Not exactly. You can make many POI files and store them seperatly.

True, but you CAN put them on GPS one at a time AND they will show up on the
GPS in the order that you installed them.

True, if you do it your way. IF however you load a set of POI's to the
folder,
then tell the POI Loader to add to the Garmin and THEN go to the Garmin
and RENAME the POI file then you can do the process over and over again.
You will end up with numerous POI files on the Garmin. You can then choose
which one to load.

True, it will show the nearest, of the POI file you selected, NOT of all the
POI
files installed.

Change the name of the POI file does no good. They appear in a list
in the order that you had the POI Loader load them to the GPS.

I currently have lots of POI files in my GPS, they appear in the order the
POI Loader loaded them, which was choosen by me. So I can have them
appear in the order I please. As an example my CAMPGROUNDS POI
files shows up first, then my ham radio 2 METER REPEATERS listing,
followed by my ham radio 440 REPEATER listing, followed by my
MILITARY BASES listing, etc., etc.

Maybe that depends on the model. On a 200w at least, all the poi files
are loaded and merged at boot time. But, as in my other post, if you
move your .csv/.gpx files into a newly created folder one at a time, in
the order you want them, then POILoader will read them in that order and
the 200w will display the categories in that order.
I also use multiple POI files. They appear to be read in to the Extras
POI list in the order they were written to the 200w subject to the
ordering as above.
Ah, that is probably the difference, the 76CSx does not do a merge on boot.
