I would ask Garmin about the free updates etc. and keep a copy of the
answer if you are buying before the 2009 maps are out.

Free updates have always been offered only if you actually bought (not
received) your product after the new version was released.

Otherwise, owners of earlier versions are offered some sort of discount.

Not to put too fine a point on it but I think Garmin goes by WHEN you
registered or activate your map set to determine if they're going to
give you a free upgrade.

For instance, if you buy the unit before Christmas and let it languish
in the closet (yeah, like that'll happen<g>) until May 15th, and they
release Version 2009 on April 25th, when you activate 2008 on May 15th
you'll find that you're in line for the free upgrade to 2009 - all you
need do is order the free DVD.

I bought several of the refurbished 2610's last year for my employees.
They came with the 2007 (or whatever was the prior version of City
Navigator). When we activated that version and registered and I don't
recall them requiring a purchase date and for damn sure they didn't
require any proof of purchase, we went right ahead and got the free map
upgrade to 2008.

Note that these were "new units" that had never had any map software
unlocked for use so I think Garmin concedes that they were either just
bought or are "new, old stock" and grant the upgrade as a courtesy.

I bought a Quest (NOS) several years ago and, IIRC, the mapping software
for it was already one or two versions behind. Obviously, it had never
been registered or unlocked. I unlocked the old version, contacted
Garmin and was granted a free upgrade to the then current map set.

I know that last year there was more than a little confusion over what
Garmin would upgrade for free, etc. but in the end it worked out for
everyone that I know.

On those refurbed 2610's, we did a group purchase of nine of them, and
one or two of the guys experienced some confusion with support about
getting the free upgrade but in the end, all were upgraded to CN 2008
without charge.

Probably true with their spiffy online registry and unlocking scheme.

I've only gone through that once with my 76CSx, having used MetroGuide
on my old eMap which didn't require unlocking.

I received free update on version of CN Europe I purchased within a month
of new release. Most of reputable vendors would do that and Garmin is
usually very good about it. But as one of other posters said - email/call
garmin to get confirmation and keep email write down customer rep name.

That's not correct. I don't remember GARMIN not ever having an earlier
cutoff date than the shipping date of the software. It's usually at least a
month.

I purchased my Garmin nuvi 250 on or about April 17th, and registered/
unlocked it immediately with the 2008 maps. Today, I received a
notification within "mygarmin" that gave me a link to either receive
via DVD or download the 2009 maps. I did not need to contact Garmin
for this, it was automatic since they had my registration date.
However, if I had not checked the site myself, I would not have known
(no email notification, for example).

I bought my Nuvi 360 on April 3rd and registered it on April 4th.

I then upgraded to CN 2009 on April 19th. I didn't get a free upgrade
notice, but had to pay for the new 2009 Update DVD.

I wonder what gives???

Anybody been told of a cutoff date?

I'll have to call Garmin CS today!!!

Glad I read this message - I just checked - and had an update for my new
260.
Yeah - had checkmarked the "email me notifications", but did not receive any
emails...

I wish they would indicate how large the download file is ???
Hard to choose between the download vs DVD without knowing,
but guessed it was around 1GB ?

Ordered the "free" DVD, which only cost me $10 shipping :)

I called and the rep said that the uncompressed file was 7.x gigs and
the compressed file was 2.x gigs. He wasn't sure if Mapsource waas
included with the download.

The compressed size is 2.04 Gig's. Mapsource is not included. It will
Uncompress and be put in your C:\Garmin directory by default, you can then
go to Garmin and just download a copy of Mapsource and install it. It will
find the Maps you now have there. That's what I did. The only problem is
I'm having problems Sending/Receiving to/from my Garmin Nuvi 780 for some
reason, so I'm still working on that part.

I went and paid the $10 for the DVD for my Garmin Nuvi 260
and it just came in the mail today.

City Navigator North America NT 2009

The product key is a big green sticker on the DVD case.

Is there a time limit to install ?
I have it in hand, but want to make sure of all the aspects of the update
before I actually do it...
