I am concidering the purchase of a sailboat with a faryman diesel engine.
Can anyone tell me if they are good engines. I heard that they are not even
made anymore. Is it possible to still get spares for them.
Thanks, John

I have one on my 1977 Cape Dory 28, a single cylinder. I believe it's the
Alpha 30 model. It has always started and run well. They are still in
business (they are a German company, I am in the US) and the only time I
needed a part , (a return fuel line) the local supplier was very responsive.
I received good advise and the part, by mail in two days. Attached is their
web address. I would

H John,

I had one in my Tarten Ten and it was bullet proof! Mine was a single cylinder
with about 12HP as I recall. All I did was change the oil regularly, keep the
fuel filters clean, keep the fuel tanks full with fuel that had additives added
to reduce moisture absorbtion as I only used about 10 USG a year. I sailed
into and out of the slip and never used the engine if I didn't have to as this
was a race boat that was raced regularly, once or twice a week in the spring
and summer (it lasts 6-8 months here!), and once or twice a month in the fall
and winter. Parts were easy to get (at least around Los Angeles CA.), at the
local marina store and what they didn't have they could get no problems. From
what I've read they are used in agriculture in Germany as field pump engines to
draw water from springs, they run them 24x7 for years on end.

parts are available in the states...it is a German Briggs and Stratton.
