I'm just getting into sailing, and I was wondering what the best
magazines out there were. Such as Cruising World, Sailing, etc.
Thanks!

Hi Beth. I think you would find that Sailing has many features that
would be of use to you, if you are very new. They always have articles
that are of benifit to all levels, and Cruising World is a little
different. More on the Cruising end of it, place, trips taken, ect. I
started out with Sailing and maintained the subscription for 12 years.
I have had Cruising World for 5 and continue with that, not Sailing. I
find that now it has more of what I am looking for.
Good sailing!!

Beth, If there is a Mecca for sailing it is San Francisco, which has
its own sailing magasine called "Latitude 38" It is free but I'm not
sure if it's available in Texas. "Latitude 38's" trade like gold
anywhere in the world. West coast sailors traveling to foreign
countries typically bring a stack with them when they fly, to
distribute to people like me who constantly need a sailing "fix". I
have been begging friends ship me multiple copies from San Francisco
monthly.

Your local marine chandlery may have free copies. Also, you can get
it delivered for $18/yr, 3rd class, $45, 1st class (useful if you are
looking for a boat to buy).

The magasine offes insightful commentary on safety issues, boats,
chartering, weather, racing, and has a large classified section. The
letters to the editor cover topics such as humorous pokes at the San
Diego Habor Nazi's to though provoking discussions of tragic sailing
accidents and pirate activity (and how to avoid them). The Latitude
38 letters to the editor offer more interesting and diverse reading
than this newsgroup.

They are located in Sausalito, California.

Hi, Beth,
We've been sailing for about five years and have subscribed to the usual
array of sailing magazines. The ones that we continue to maintain are
"Sailing", "Coastal Cruising" (which is published in Beaufort, N.C. and
e-mail address is 76461...@compuserve.com) and "Practical Sailor" (which
is in Newport, RI 800-829-9087 for subscriptions). The first two are full
of how we did it and how to do it articles; the third is the "Consumer
Reports" of sailing. We keep getting them because there is at least one
thing each issue that interests us.
Have fun sailing.

Similar to "Latitude 38" is "48° North". They have a website at:
