Anyone have any insight on the Garmin 48 , 12channel GPS? They have one on
sale here for $260 and my brother thinks that is a cool price and is a good
GPS.
Thanks

I like Garmin GPSs - I have a 12XL, but would probably have bought the
48 if it had been available at the time.

There is lots of discussion of GPS receivers in the
news:sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup. You may find a review of the 48
at http://joe.mehaffey.com. There is lots of GPS info there and on my
GPS site listed below.

I have a Garmin 48. Best damn handheld that there is!!
Been lots of good press reviews also.... Practical Sailor, etc.
Has a nice option of removable antenna for remote mounting, etc.

Hi Pete,
I recently came across a Garmin GPS48... I had my share of
questions as to why the G48 was better than the G-12XL...
The features of the G-48 are optimized for MARINE use (built in
waypoints for foghorns, bouys, shoals, lighthouses, etc.). The
G-12xl by comparison is optimized for hiking.
The G48 has the built in Marine database, the other units do not have this
feature. The Quad Helix antenna is designed for better satellite lock and
reception. I attended the NY Powerboat Show Today in NYC, and spoke with
representatives from Garmin, and West Marine about why the G48 is different
than the G-12XL...they said the same thing, the marine database, and the
superior quality of the unit!
Check around on the pricing...I've seen it priced@ $259 through CME - Consumer
Marine Electronics here in NJ @ 800-332-2628 and even West Marine had it on
sale for the same price!
I'd take advantage of the offer...Sounds likea great deal!
Good Luck and happy boating!
