Медики не смотрят снимки. Они их конвертируют в 8-bit JPEG и посылают
какому-нибудь радиологу (возможно в Индии) посмотреть на 8-битном мониторе.

A typical 12-bit medical X-ray may be 2048 pixels by 2560
pixels in dimension. This translates to a file size of
10,485,760 bytes. A typical 16-bit mammogram image may be 4500
pixels by 4500 pixels in dimension for a file size of 40,500,000 (40
megabytes)

The resulting system is called DX-1480 and features a digital detector
based on Samsung CCDs, with two cameras used in the 14 x 17-inch
detector. Unlike most digital x-ray systems that produce 12-bit images,
DX-1480 acquires data with 16 bits of depth and a resolution of 3.4 lp/mm.
