Photographs obtained by POLITICO appear to show Madison Cawthorn, the
embattled Republican congressman from North Carolina who recently
accused his GOP colleagues of inviting him to orgies, wearing lingerie
in what appears to be a party setting.
Cawthorn, 26, was raised in a conservative Baptist community in
Henderson County, North Carolina, and has staked his political persona
on arch-traditional Christian principles and the insistence of the
importance of a kind of hypermasculinity. His comments about “the sexual
perversion” in Washington made on a podcast, which he later admitted
were exaggerated, drew the public disapproval and disavowal of Minority
Leader Kevin McCarthy as well as other Republican leaders including
those in his North Carolina congressional caucus.

The Larry Craig scandal was an incident that began on June 11, 2007,
with the arrest of Craig, who at the time was a Republican United States
Senator from Idaho, for lewd conduct in a men's restroom at the
Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport.
On June 11, 2007, Craig was arrested at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul
International Airport on suspicion of disorderly conduct.[5] The nature
of the alleged activity has been categorized by some as cottaging.[6]
According to the police report, the police officer sat in a bathroom
stall as part of an undercover operation investigating complaints of
sexual activity in the restroom. After about 13 minutes of sitting in
the stall, the police officer observed Craig lingering outside and
frequently peeking through the crack of the door on the stall. Craig
then entered the stall to the left of the officer's stall. The police
officer made the following observations, which he recorded in his report
of the incident, as to what happened next:
At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a
signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped
his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. ... The
presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right
foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my
stall area. Craig then proceeded to swipe his left hand under the stall
divider several times, with the palm of his hand facing upward.
In December 2007, eight gay men came forward to the Idaho Statesman
newspaper alleging either sexual encounters with Craig or attempts by
Craig to engage in sexual encounters.[48][49] Four of the men gave the
newspaper graphic, recorded details of their alleged sexual encounters.
The stall (second from right) at the Minneapolis–St. Paul Airport
bathroom in which the incident occurred gained notoriety.[58] The
restroom was later demolished.
