I thought it would be an interesting idea to get some convo going about
metal album cover artwork. (For example: best covers, worst covers, most
unusual, favorite artist, etc etc etc.) Not a POLL, please, just a little
conversation. I think it could turn into an interesting topic.

Why not. This group needs a push. I don't have a favorite album cover
because there's so many of them. I do want to say that Hugh Syme has to
be one of the best cover designers (and also the most requested). He
does other bands not in metal, too. Off my head, I'll add Quiet Riot
as one of my favorite covers (their last album). Lets hear others.

Derek Riggs is a really great cover artist. I've found his work to be sort of
like modern Gothic meets Wolverton...

The cover to "Metal Massacre IX" has a simple but funny illustration. It's
this really mean, nasty looking Death figure, with a hockey stick that has a
spiked ball at one end. Death Hockey. What a concept...
I'm also very fond of the covers of Judas Priests "Sad Wings Of Destiny" and
"Rocka Rolla". More cool art-work... Strangely enough, I saw a computer game on
a friends Atari ST where a some-whhat modified reproduction of the cover to
"Rocka Rolla" was used as the companies logo or something...

There was a beat-up VW van with a "Just Say Sho' To Drugs" bumper sticker

on University Avenue, detonated it, reducing the van and everything nearby into
a pile of charred scrap. Nobody parks piece-of-shit cars next to my wheels.

True. There are so many little details in that cover that it took many
minutes from me to search them all. In fact I'm not sure that I have
found them all. So, is there anyone who can list connections with details
and songs/albums?

Some of my favorite album covers would have to include:

Iron Maiden -Somewhere in Time-
VoiVod -Nothingface- and -Killing Technology-
Flotsam and Jetsam -Doomsday for the Deceiver-
Violent Playground -Thrashin' Blues-
Sepultura -Beneath the Remains-
Ozzy Osbourne -The Ultimate Sin-
Leeway -Born to Expire-
Guns 'N' Roses -Appetite for Destruction- (original)
Laaz Rockit -Know Your Enemy-

There must be a zillion more I can't think of right now.
Least favorites are far too numerous to mention, but King Diamond's
-Conspiracy- and Doro's -Force Majeure- come to mind.

As far as artists are concerned, my favorites (in order) would have to be:

1. Derek Riggs (Iron Maiden)
2. Pushead (Misfits, Septic Death, Metallica singles, etc.etc.)
3. Away (VoiVod)

Well lessee, the refrences to Iron Maiden albums and songs I see include:
ACES HIGH Bar
ACACIA (Avenue)
The digital clock reads 23:58, or two minutes to midnight
ANCIENT MARINER Seafood Resteraunt
Sand Dune Nightclub (DUNE being the novel that "To Tame A Land" is based on)
The eye of horus (neon)
The pyramid (duh)
Live After Death theatre marquee
Icarus (the guy in wings, falling in flames)
Phantom Opera Hotel
Iron Maiden (the poster)

Those are all the ones I can find on the casette inset. Need to buy the record
I do...
There are some other non-album refrences that are interesting. The Ruskin Arms,
where Iron Maiden first started performing. And the Long Beach sign on the side
of the building with the neon TEXAS sign across it. (For the non-IM fans, Long
Beach is in Texas, and it is the sight of several of the live performances on
the Live After Death album...)

And then there are the totally non-Iron Maiden items, such as the TARDIS from
Dr. Who, the Batman figure, the movie Blade Runner on the marquee... I guess
Derek Riggs is also an SF fan.

Yes I agree they are very nice ones. One other I like alot from JP is
the simplistic cover of British Steel. From other albums the cover
of the molly hatchet album with the "dark rider" is a timeless classic.
Another good one along the same lines is the cover of See You In Hell
from Grim Reaper.

You got all the references I got out of the album cover, but you
missed something. Long Beach Arena is in Long Beach, CA, not Texas.
If you listen to Live After Death, this is stated a few times (like
during Number of the Beast, among other places).

Most covers have a cat and a special sign on them.
I could not find the cat on 'Powerslave'.
Anyone knows where the rotten animal has gone to?

One of the most artistic covers I have seen a la Heavy Metal was the jacket
to one of my favorite albums, "Flight of the Griffin." Released by the
band of the same name (later shortened to "Griffin"), and available on the
Shrapnel label back in 1984, these guys have since drifted off into the
Forgotten Realm of Metal Bands -- however, their music was great, and their
album artwork was fabulous.

Personally, I think the *Iron Maiden* album covers are the most
"inventive". They have a lot of imagination going in to them and
always have.

I don't know about the cat on the album covers, but on every album
I have seen, there is a grim reaper somewhere.

I too find Iron Maiden's covers to be the most interesting and I like
trying to find meanings behind what they put on them. Somewhere in Time
is very interesting, as a great deal of the other albums or detailed on
the cover art of it. Besides, Wasted Years is a great song.

I don't know about any LONG BEACH in Texas.......but those live Maiden tracks
were recorded in LONG BEACH, California (October 1984).

As for other album artwork.........The cover to Hurricane's new LP is kinda
interesting. It is a chick being fucked by a machine. Buy this one soon
before it goes the way of Appetite's original cover.

Worst album covers.......
POISON......Open Up and Say Ah!!!!
CINDERELLA..Long Cold Winter
CRUE........Too Fast For Love (great album but the sight of Vince Neil's
crotch just dosen't turn me on)

Aside from the "Flight of the Griffin" cover I mentioned earlier, I
think the covers to King Diamond's "Abigail" and "Them" albums, as
well as both "Keeper of the Seven Keys" covers by Helloween deserve
mention.

I bought Helloween's Keeper of the 7 keys part 1 because of the artwork, first
time ever I did that, probably be the last time as well, but its my favourite
album so I ain't complaining.

Good covers I have; Magnum's stuff, esp Storyteller's Night. Saxon's Crusader
(well, I like it), umm, and I can't think anymore.
Is this going to be a proper poll? And who's going to run it if it is?

Cheers,
Andy.

The sign is Derek Riggs' signature---look closely and you'll notice that it's
a very stylized "DR" (DJR? I don't remember now).

Is there a grim reaper on the first album or _Killers_?
