Rush are almost as bad as Ozzy when it comes to recycling the same songs
over and over.

At least there's some decent older material. Entre Nous hasn't been
played in over 20 years, and Witch Hunt hasn't been played in a while
either. They should have left the drum solo in YYZ, they're a bit
passe these days anyway. They've done Natural Science recently, they
should have dumped it and done Jacob's Ladder instead.

I have tickets for their show next Friday. Based on that set list, it
will cost me around $2.00 a song. That's a good value.

I have never heard Rush cover "Summertime Blues" and look forward to
it because I noticed a little bit of a Blue Cheer sound on "One Little
Victory" from the Vapor Trails album. It's also cool that they are
playing "A Passage to Bangkok" because I would feel cheated if they
didn't. I'm a little disappointed that they chose "Mission" from Hold
Your Fire because there are better songs from that album. Oh well, we
cannot have everything we want.

Expect photos from me if I am able to smuggle in my camera.

Put it in your bra. They don't usually grope women these days. If
they have a metal detector (those damn terrorists are RUINING it for
us bootleggers...) you can always claim you have a metal plate in your
hip.

Does Ozzy vary the flavor of his spunk when you suck him off?

Joking aside, this is hardly the same old Rush set. Lots of stuff from the new
one, and deep album cuts like Passage To Bangkok, Natural Science, Entre Nous
and Circumstances are excellent. This would be like Ozzy throwing in St. Vitus
Dance or Johnny Blade. You let me know when that happens.

They did a good job with that song. Definitely chanelling Blue Cheer, who has
the best version, imo. Let me know if they have the washer and dryers on stage
again.

Well, I got an email today about two new Rush shows being posted for
download (Atlanta and Tampa).

I went to check out the listings and found this interesting segment of
text written by some guy named elgimpo:

Items of note:

The dryers have been replaced by three rotisserie chicken roasters
which are as tall as Alex's stacks of H&K amplifiers, and are believed
to say "Hen House" across the front of them.
The opening video begins with a dream sequence with the Alex and Neil,
reminiscent of the Jerry Stiller video from R30: Alex wakes up and
taps someone sleeping beside him. Neil rolls over, and they both look
at each other and yell 'AHHHHHHHHHHH", then after an animated
sequence, Alex wakes up and says something to the affect of "What did
they do to my food?"...it then cuts to Geddy who is sitting in a chair
approached by an old man in a Scottish kilt who speaks with a Scottish
accent who tells Geddy he doesn't care how he is feeling, that the
show must go on etc, and threatens him with humorous threats IF he
doesn't get up and go do the show to which they all ran out. The guy
in the Scottish costume is actually Geddy, dressed in make up and wig.
At the end of the show, another video of Scottish Geddy plays, where
he tells people to go home because he wants to get back to eating his
chicken.
The video intro for the second set is all Alex in rare, comical form,
playing several characters on the Snakes and Arrows Leela board. The
board shifts around the screen and highlights certain lines to which
Alex pops up and executes typical Alex rants.
There is a video of Bob & Doug McKenzie to introduce The Larger Bowl.
The Larger Bowl had video snippets showing alternating images between
the rich and the poor, etc. Towards the end you see iron gates on 2
screens, but as they focus in on the buildings behind them you see
that one is a mansion and the other is a prison.
Workin' Them Angels had a video accompaniment similar to the album art
of various types of workers and soldiers with angel wings.
There is a South Park video intro to Tom Sawyer; during the video, the
South Park characters begin playing Tom Sawyer but Cartman sings the
wrong lyrics, "I traveled down the river with a black guy", which
leads to an argument about the lyrics revolving around one of them
saying that he's actually read the book and that's how the story goes,
but the other quickly corrects him saying "that was Huckleberry Finn".
Cartman then says "I'm Geddy LEE and I can sing it however I want".
They then agree to start again to "get it right" and count off the
beginning where Rush takes over and plays.
During "A Passage To Bangkok", a video plays showing footage of far
east trains, poppy fields, marijuana plants and many other scenes that
relate to the song lyrics.
Alex plays a mandola mounted on an Omega stand during "Workin' Them
Angels"
"Digital Man" may have been abbreviated, missing the first "He's got a
force field" lyric.

Well, it was an amazing performance and one which left me very
energized even at this late hour.

I'm not going to give you a song by song analysis. Rather, I will
mention highlights and interesting moments:

The band played like a well-oiled machine, and their mixed sound was
excellent. They have an impressive stage show with intricate video
presentations, but I don't really care much about visuals. They used
footage of a chimpanzee smoking a cigarette that made me laugh for
obvious reasons.

Geddy sang at the top of his game except for the first song. His
vocals were all over the place for about two minutes. After that,
everything was top notch. His bass playing was also phenomenal. Your
jaw is going to hit the ground when you witness his live performance
of "YYZ." Geddy claims to be making a documentary and might make you
say hello to Canada.

Alex played very well all night. He used several different electric
guitars, an acoustic guitar, and a mandola. That acoustic was odd. I
swear it had more than 6 tuning pegs on each side of the headstock.
Anyway, his background vocals were dead on all night.

Of great interest to you, Neil was a powerhouse from start to finish.
His playing has always reminded me of mathematics because of its
precision. He played a drum solo that was actually four solos in one.
The first solo is standard rock on his normal set. Then the set spins
around as he turns around on his seat. He proceeds to play a solo on
these electric type drums that have programmed sounds on them instead
of regular sounds. He also uses a xylophone pad to play this little
Japanese accompaniment. Then he changes style and plays a less
memorable solo over a preprogrammed back beat. Finally, the set spins
around again back to the normal drums and he tears it up with a jazz/
big band/swing solo.

My favorite song was "A Passage to Bangkok." I literally got
goosebumps on my arms. I didn't care for the "Summertime Blues" cover
because I like the wild abandon of Blue Cheer. Rush approached it with
too much technique. Oddly, they seemed to achieve a Blue Cheer sound
quite easily on parts of "One Little Victory."

Just in case you want to plan your evening: The show here started at
about 7:40pm. They broke for intermission at 9:00pm. They resumed at
9:20pm and played until 11:00pm.

I got a Rush Fan Advisory via email a day before the show stating the
following:

Moderate Traffic Advisory! Due to large volumes of concert and local
traffic, expect delays and give yourself plenty of time to arrive to
Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater.

The Following Items Are Permitted For This Concert:
-Non-professional cameras (no detached lenses)
-Umbrellas, blankets, lawn chairs shorter than 9'' tall
-One factory sealed bottle of water per guest
-Small food items in a clear gallon-sized plastic bag (no utensils)

When I got there, they said the band had changed their minds and would
confiscate any cameras. They said the actual tour would take your
stuff. I didn't chance it, so the only souvenir I have is my ticket
stub. Just a word to the wise in case you wanted to get pictures.
Beware!

Who brings a bag of snacks to a concert?

Jeez was there storytime and naptime too?

Glad you enjoyed it. I've still got to wait awhile for my show. Did the video
screen show Buddy Rich playing during the jazz/swing part of Neil's solo? That
sounds pretty similar to the solo he did when I saw them on the Vapor Trails
tour.

I never bring food to concerts, and I try not to buy food at concerts
because I am not fond of paying $8.00 for a piece of cardboard calling
itself pizza.

Actually, I opted to eat a large Baskin Robbins chocolate shake for
dinner because it was too hot to eat real food. Since I stopped eating
refined sugars about two years ago, my blood sugar was spiking during
the first set. I almost got into a fist fight with this obnoxious,
bespectacled shrimp of a man. I know I could have taken him in a fight
because he was really wimpy. He would not sit down in his seat and was
blocking my view. I asked him nicely to sit down, but he refused. I
moved to an empty seat and watched him from afar. I was having
demented fantasies about punching him in the eye. I assume his glasses
would have broken, thereby lodging a shard of glass in his eye socket.
Then I thought about him begging for mercy on the ground as I stomped
on his windpipe. Sick, huh? I blame it on the sugar because I am
usually a very nice person. After intermission, four men were
threatening to kill him for the same reasons. I suspect he had a nice
welcoming committee waiting for him in the parking lot.
