Overall it was a very good show.
First, I think the crew was still working out some kinks with the gimmicks.
Rosie didn't inflate and one of the video screens seemed to be damaged. No
big deal.
What was a big deal was the horrible sound quality where I was (Second
Level -- on Cliff's side). Sometimes the sound was good, other times it
was so loud you couldn't make anything out. Sometimes the mix was so bad
you couldn't hear Phil, other times Angus would cut out completely. Again,
it was fucking loud. I have not been on an upper level in a concert in a
long time, so I guess I forgot how bad it can be at the PA level. Right in
the middle of FTATR, you could hear no backing vocals, then all the sudden,
that was all you could hear. Strange.
When the mix wasn't too bad, and you could actually hear, the band sounded
very good. Brian was excellent on night one of the tour. And Angus still
has good legs and chops for an old fella. They missed a few cues. Like at
the beginning of RnRT -- I think Phil missed the beginning. Or maybe he
didn't, and it was so loud I couldn't make it out. There were explosions,
and this may have made so he couldn't hear Angus.
Honestly, the train is fucking stupid. And the beginning video is even
stupiderist.
I'll give the crowd a C-, and I'll give the Arena a D+ for organization.
Best part: Five new songs. That was worth the price of admission. I never
would have thought that they would play more songs from BI than BiB. The
songs sounded good, and the band appeared excited to be playing them. If
there is video out there of this show, you won't believe how into BI Phil
was. I have not seen that much animation from Phil ever. He was hamming it
by showing off and loving every minute of it. Everybody I was with noticed
it right away and thought that it was great.
Phil was the biggest laugh of the night. Pennsylvania recently enacted anti
smoking legislation. Fuck that, he's Phil Rudd. He lit up several times,
and it was put up on the big screen over and over. A lot of people got a
laugh out that. And quite a few wished they could have joined him in
having a smoke. I would not be surprised if someone tried to give him a
ticket on this tour.
Surprisingly, the band did not take much time between songs. I wasn't
timing things, but they seemed to shorten the Jack and LTBR -- which is fine
with me. Maybe not shorten, but did not extend as much as usual. The
band's energy was still very high throughout the show Honestly, I don't see
how Angus is going to be able to keep this pace up for over 18 months.
I absolutely understand why they cut back the set list. If they didn't,
they are not going to survive the tour. Father time catches up, and anyone
who expected them to play over two hours every night is unrealistic.
I'd rather see them play a strong 17 song set, rather than dog it through
21. This was very apparent to me at Roseland and Sarsfest.
Another great point for me was no HAAR and SUL. Goodbye to those suckers.
Low point in the setlist for me was Rosie. They performed it well, but this
song needs to go IMO. I know it is popular, but I'd rather hear HV, BB or
LW.
Overall, the show exceeded my expectations. The skank, who has seen them 7
times or so, was totally impressed. No complaints. The AC/DC virgins who
were around me thought the show was phenomenal. For a bunch of old
fuckers, they were awesome. If you go in there expecting them to be like
they were 20 or more years ago, you're a retard. If you realized that
Brian is one year from being eligible for Social Security, you should be
impressed. I'm going to see them again in January, and after seeing them
last night, I have no regret in purchasing those tickets.

I think that playing 3 off of the new album would suffice. I'm going
to see them in new york at the garden, I'm keeping my hopes up that
they deviate from that setlist.

We had print out tickets. They just scanned the barcode on each of our
print outs. We got in an argument about that before the show. I said we
all may need to go in together and show the credit card used to purchase the
tickets. But that was not the case. I would not count on that at other
venues, each place is different, I believe.

As a smoker, I find this very funny.
I thought about the "smoking" issue when Dave and I arrived on Sunday
afternoon. As much as these guys smoke, I wondered how they would
react to the law. Dave and I walked over to the backstage area
parking lot/entrance and I said to Dave: "They smoke like chimneys and
it is illegal to smoke in the arena...We waited and saw a few crew
members come out for smoke breaks, but that ws it. I think they just
completely ignored the law or the arena had some type of room setup
inside just for the band to smoke..

Come on, they're touring a new album, they can play 5 songs of it.
I recall during SUL tour how some were sad that only 2 or 3 songs of the
new album were played, and the rest being "always the same songs".

So glad HAAR is gone. Man that song sucks! I like SUL, but its not mandatory.

I think most people would rather see the return of High Voltage or Sin City
or Jailbreak to the set than hear a slew of new songs.

I would agree with you on this. Jailbreak especially...one of my

Back in the day, High Voltage and Jailbreak were always the two songs I most
looked forward to hearing at a DC show. I could never understand why they
dropped either one.

Me either. I think it's because they usually didn't get the tempo quite
right. Always seemed like it was just a tick too fast.

Great review Chris. I think everyone is forgetting what the purpose of a
warmup gig is. I've seen a lot of people bitching about the length of the
show and the number of songs. I say count yourselfs lucky that you even had
the opportunity to do something so rare. I'm not surprised a bit that the
setlist was short. After eight years of cobwebs, you need a little time to
break off the rust. It does suck that Rosie now needs a boob job. Heh.

So far I agree. That's as gay as the video with the monkeys fucking in the
BB tour.

But that's good! However, I struggle to find three songs on the album worth
listening to.

As a drummer it warms my heart to hear this. I've always been a little
putoff by Phil for various reasons, one of them being that he's a spoiled
rotten crybaby with a bad attitude. This may be the first album in I don't
know how many years that I can hear his enthousiasm. (fucking spell check)
He sounds really fresh on this album.

Yeah, for real. They clearly didn't want a repeat of the start of the last
tour, where they didn't play any warmup gigs and the first show in Grand
Rapids was, by all accounts, a disaster of missed cues and production
gaffes. A warmup gig is a good opportunity for everybody to get their heads
in the game, band members and support staff alike.
