Now that they are apparently gone, are there any alternatives? The
cheap phot studios are for little kids. I would love at least some
TLC and less harsh, more flattering light (read: blur it, please) if
not a total make-over.
Suggestions?

Berge Zobian used to do some of that stuff but I'm not sure if he still does...
I haven't seen him in years but he's very competent.

Just Tooling Down The Internet Superhighway With my G4.......
Any serious amateur with good 35mm equipment (Cannon, Nikon, Pentax,
etc.) can take great outdoor posed shots. Open shade (north side of a
monument, house, building) is essential for photographing women. Great
for the skin. Use an 80 to105mm lense rather than a normal lense, and
shoot at around F2 to wipe out the background due to resulting short
focal length. A slow film will be fine at that opening, say iso (asa)
200. The shots can be well posed portraits, but informal in tone due to
the outdoor setting. Cost working with a skilled friend is about $10 to
get the "proofs" from Kodak. If you like the results, the sky is the
limit on enlargements.
I just priced photographers for my son's graduation picture, as
TD Brown's packages started at $100-something and went up
to $300-something for the one we wanted. The proofs really
were not very good and he was made to wait over an hour for
his "appointment", so I decided to get them done at a "real"
photographer. The prices were $200 and up, but most offered
filters and other effects. In the end I went to trusty old Sears.
The package was $50, the photos were great. They take a
pose, show you it on a computer screen, and if you don't like
it, they do it over, up to a certain number of poses... I think 9.
You're pretty much going to get something that looks good.
I'm not sure about filters but they did white and black
backgrounds, as well as traditional all in the same sitting.
Most photographers wanted you to choose your background
in advance and stick with it. My family also had a family
portrait done at Sears. It was cheap, lots of fun, and all
9 of us came out presentable. All the pictures we bought
from that sitting, including a framed 11x14 "oil effect" for
over Mom and Dad's mantel, came to about $100.
Of course, they were probably not as much fun as a glamour
shot. I did a little online search and came up with Livingstone
Photography

I'd just love to see you in red feathers, Mary.

Didn't Glamour Shots do racy, lingerie stuff?
That would be some funeral!
I had them done about 8 years ago. They came out very nice. You could chose
what you wanted to wear, how you wanted your hair and your make up. It was
up to the individual if they wanted to look cheep or nice.

Laury, what you said.
I took two of our kids to the Sears Portrait Studio on Newport Ave. in
East Providence last Saturday, and I was thrilled with the results. It was
*very* crowded there with families having Christmas pictures of their
little kids , but the photog took all the time we needed. Each kid got to
have 3 different backgrounds to choose from. The results were super, and I
can't wait to pick up the packages on Dec. 2! If our youngest son's school
pics come out awful again (I haven't gotten them back yet), I'm taking him
over to Sears as well.
You can see my two favorite shots from the Sears session at a Web page
maintained by another newsgroup I frequent. Scroll down past the first two
pics on the page and you will see the children's portraits.

I have been *so* disappointed in the school portraits by TD Brown and
other companies in recent years... I've sent most of them back for
refunds. You get no choice, the kids are nervous, and you can't be there
to groom their hair and coach them and make them smile naturally.
There are Sears printable coupons online to take to the portrait studio
with you for extra discounts. Go to www.searsportrait.com and click on
"coupons" on the top menu bar. They let me combine *two* coupons -- one
for a dollars-off discount on the whole session, and the other for
individual sheets of pics.
Also, if you give them your e-mail address on the form you fill out at the
studio, the next day you will receive an e-mail with a link to all of your
photo poses! You can order extra prints online, etc.
Hmmm, I think I should get a commission, don't you? ;-)

You wouldn't happen to be between 18 and 35 now, would you? :)

(I couldn't resist)
Depends on what you want I guess, if you just want a real nice picture done
for your obit, then you can't go wrong with the sears in East Providence, we
have pictures done every year of our three kids there and are always happy.
If you want real nice professional Photographs done then go to Donnelly in
East Providence 438-5050 we had our wedding done by him and he was really
really good.
If you want them done outdoors pick a really nice day and head on over to
the Grist Mill, there is a lot of nice scenery there especially this time of
year with the colors and such, plus Mr. Donnelly will have a ton of other
suggestions for you.
That's my 2 cents for you.
I have been wondering about just that as I want to have a portrait done of my
daughter and myself as a gift for hubby.
I found Livingstone Photography in the yellow. It says Glamour makeover in the
add but I have not investigated any further.
Anyone know them??
My inner child is
a mean little bastard.

That's the website I posted, Betz, check it out, you'll be amazed.
Lots of their stuff is a bit more uh glamourous than I'd be willing to
do, though, lol. That is why I said I'd like to see Mary in red
feathers, although there are LOTS of other options. Oh my.

I have no personal knowledge of them, though!

Sears Photographer: So are the pictures for a special occasion?
Customer: Why Yes, they are. My picture is going to be in the paper.
Sears Photographer: Wow, that's great. What's the story going to be about?
Customer: It will be about my DEATH.
Geeez, how depressing.

When I die, I'll just put a picture of Brad Pitt with my Obit. :-)
