Palestinian camp children 'shoot' gloomy life in Lebanon

by Rana MoussawiSun Apr 15, 2:05 PM ET

A boy smokes a cigarette, another holds a Kalashnikov, mud and garbage
everywhere. These are the pictures of everyday life as shot by children
in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

The images of gloomy reality have been taken by 13-year-old Yasmine and
dozens of other children at the refugee camps where half of Lebanon's
400,000 Palestinian refugees still live in miserable conditions.

"Photography is an extraordinary leisure activity. It is like a game,
but also a way to fulfill our dreams," said Yasmine, whose only other
fun activity so far had been to roll old tyres on roads around her camp.

Photography came to the camps' young people through a project launched
by a local association called Image Festival Association-Zakira (Memory,
in Arabic).

"We want photography to become a leasure activity for these children,
many of whom are forced to leave school early to help their parents
because of the economic crisis," organiser Bilal Jawish said.

The project allows the youngsters, mainly aged between seven and 12, to
take pictures of daily life using disposable cameras, after a few
instructions from professional photographers who are members of Zakira.

The association plans to distribute disposable cameras to a total of 500
children across all 12 Palestinian camps where their families have
sought refuge since the creation of Israel in 1948.

The organisers say that the 100 best pictures will be published in a
book and that exhibitions of the photos will be held in Lebanon, the
Arab world, Europe and the United States.

A few of the young people taking part in the project will be selected to
undergo training with professional photographers.

"We will teach them how to take pictures, maybe one day they can become
professional photographers," said Jawish.

Palestinian refugees live in poverty and have a high rate of
unemployment, particularly because they are officially banned from
dozens of jobs in Lebanon.

The project has already achieved wonders.

Through it, Mohamad, an 11-year-old boy at Rashidiyeh camp in southern
Lebanon, has been able to overcome his fear and roll out of his home in
his wheelchair to take pictures.

Mohamad lost both his legs in the explosion of a fragmentation bomb
dropped by Israeli forces on southern Lebanon during the Jewish state's
military offensive in July-August 2006.

For months, Mohamad would not leave his house, but now he is determined
"to become a photographer."

Most of the children's pictures show garbage-strewn streets, sewage
running along the narrow alleys of the camp.

They also show homes riddled with bullets, graffiti glorifying late
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and rooms overcrowded by large families.

On one picture, children stand near an old rail track which once linked
Beirut to Haifa - before the latter city became part of Israel in 1948.
The rails once ran through Rashidiyeh.

"It symbolizes the desire to return to Palestine," said one of the
organisers.

It is hard to take fair positions in this perverted world of Nazi,
Zionazi and Islamofascist extremists.

When you condemn what the Nazis did to the Jews, you offend the Nazis.
Figuratively speaking of Nazis, of course.

When you condemn what Nazi Israel is doing to the Palestinians and its
Arab neighbors, you offend the Zionazis.
Figuratively speaking of Zionazis, of course.

When you condemn Muslim terrorists, you offend the Islamofascists.
Figuratively speaking of Ismalofascists, of course.

However, your post is not so bad and we all should reflect on the
suffering of Palestinian children and condemn all those responsible.
No doubt, Nazi Israel is mostly responsible but so are those wealthy
Arab potentates who could easily help the Palestinians but prefer to
use them for ant-Jewish propaganda.

Jews are entitled to a country of their own and they should have one
within the borders established at the creation of Israel. They should
also support themselves and stop relying on welfare from the American
taxpayers.

Have a nice vegetarian day!

We can thank them for the 1973 oil embargo, for the disastrous Iraq
war and soon the war with Iran.

Naturally, you have to be an "anti-Semite" to notice those things.

How about that slime ball Wolfowitz? They put him in charge of World
Bank to clean up corruption and the first thing he does is hire his
girlfriend and give her illegal raises. Naturally, only an "anti-
Semite" would notice that he is the same guy (with a few more of his
tribe and neocons) who got us into the Iraq war.

Why the Jews are entitled for their country?
Based on what?
Think before you say some thing!

It's called Jewish global economy!
If some one use a credit card in Mongolia or the North Pole, a Jew

Think before you say some thing. Both events were orchestrated here in
USIsrael.
73' oil embargo was the result of, US getting off the the gold standard,
plummeting the $$$ value, so as the petrol $$$.
Sadam was used and financed by the US to fight the war against Iran.
Remember the Iran/Contra deal?

Wrong! Wolfowitz Da Jew was the architect of the occupation of Iraq.
That's why he got the greasy job at the World Bank.'
US war is not working out, his head has to roll.

I really do not see how anyone could say that Israel has no right to
exist. It is not the question of the right to exist but a question of
conduct. Israel is acting a lot as Nazi Germany did (something you
should like about Israel) but that can change and hopefully for the
better.

However, do you could turn over Slovakia, your country, to the Jews in
exchange for their current country :-)
